Sleeping on a futon is something we’re not used to, but it’s all part of the experience. I’d recommend hiring a car to get around, as there is so much to see in the area.

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese hospitality experience, come here! I came here with my boyfriend in Mid-April to celebrate his 30th birthday, and he loved the ryokan and the experience! We were so lucky to catch the fully bloomed Sakura along the lake and a clear view of Mount Fuji! I booked a Japanese style room with open-air bath (onsen), and it included a standard Kaiseki plan (supper and breakfast). And the ryokan was so kind that they arranged a room with a best view of Mount Fuji. See pictures for our room :) We arrived earlier than check-in time, but the ryokan received us and stored our luggages. By the time we came back for the room, the suitcases were already sent to our room. They also arranged a private room for our supper which was super cute and photogenic. We loved our room so much we spent most of the day in it. My boyfriend loved the outdoor bath in our room so much he even woke up early (before 5am) to take a bath and enjoy the view. It was vibey with the fog on Lake Kawaguchi. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Maruei is a ryokan full of Japanese characters that ticked all my boxes: 1. A tradition ryokan located at Lake Kawaguchi. There's an observation deck at the rooftop that overlooks the lake and Mt. Fuji 2. Beautiful interior with character 3. Private room with open air onsen AND a good view - perfect for people with tattoos. It also has public onsens - there's one with the perfect Mt Fuji view, and there's a rock onsen which looks cool. 4. The gift shop in the lobby is a bonus! Especially if you don't want to worry about buying souvenirs when you spend the day going sightseeing 5. Very friendly and helpful staff. Clear instructions/ guideline in English were given at check in. 6. Free shuttle that takes you to Kawaguchiko station
