I went to this ryokan with my husband without expecting much at the beginning other than seeing the old traditional taisho architectual style for the ryokan. But upon our arrival we were greeted very politely from a staff offering us an umbrella ( as it was raining) and treated well from the start. We loved the exterior and interior of this inn and I am glad that I made a right choice for the place to stay in Ueda, Nagano. My husband is English and Japanophile. He was very impressed with the decor of this ryokan and said he couldn't find any fault with this ryokan - several choice of hotspring baths, each room was large enough fitted with its own bathroom and very peaceful and the food was lovely. I read some of the negative review by a foreign tourist about this ryokan, but honestly I don't quite understand why they were not treated well by the staff. They have to realise at times inns in some remote places might not have got used to have foreign visitors stayin at their traditional inns, so possibly they might not know how to treat the foreign visitors, especialy if they are only used to be treated in the same way as they were in a hotel in a big city. They should have realised that Ryokans are different from hotels ! Anyway we both love this ryokan so much that we will definitely return to stay at this place again.

“excellent onsen and ryokan”

My wife and I are big onsen fans and go probably about 8 times a year to different places. this time we went to Hanaya - excellent service, excellent kaiseikiryori and beautiful old ryokan. My wife and I are big onsen fans and go probably about 8 times a year to different places. this time we went to Hanaya - excellent service, excellent kaiseikiryori and beautiful old ryokan. I was very pleased. We took a friend who is leaving japan (and speaks little japanese) for one last memory ..impeccable. the only negative would be the fact that you can hear the people in the floor above and next door - the building is very old (well maintained) ... by the way, you can walk around to beautiful small temple and shrine as well as various bars all in walking distance.

We spent one night in this inn-it is 100 years old and still retains much of the feel of the past. There are three types of bath-a marble,woodland view and open air.The first two rotates between the sexes at various times whilst the open air has both male and female baths available all the time.The water temp is fairly high but not unbareable. The food was excellent-there are some special choices (eg, horse meat sashimi) which you can order in advance which is a nice touch.The room was large and spacious. The staff were polite and attentive.I can't vouch for the English language support as one of us is Japanese but all the room information was in Japanese so probably some Japanese language ability is required to get the best experience. All in all this was a great place and we intend to return but it is probably not the best choice for the first time non-japanese speaking guest.
