Niigata is not on the beaten path for tourists, although it should be. I will fully credit Chris Broad with putting the idea in our heads to visit the sake bar/store in the JR train station as a bucket list item. Hotel Okura is a 15 minute walk from the JR station, but only a few minutes on the bus. The hotel is on the bank of the river, adjacent to the Bandai Bridge, and is central to everything in the city. There are ample shops and cafes and restaurants nearby as well as large and small shops. The hotel itself is well staffed, clean, well kept, and the elevators come quickly. There is a large foyer if one wanted to meet a guest there, there is also driveway with taxis waiting to take you anywhere you need to go. We asked one of the staff to recommend an onsen within the city and he explained where it was, gave us great directions and offered to arrange the taxi for us. There is a restaurant and bar in the hotel, giving it a vibe of a grander hotel than what we'd stayed in up to this point. Everything is within walking distance, but to save some time take a bus. We'd definitely stay there again.

“Old but lovely hotel”

The Okura has a great location overlooking the river and on the Loop bus route. It’s a 7 minute taxi ride from the station. There are lovely walks along paths right outside and along the river. The Okura has a great location overlooking the river and on the Loop bus route. It’s a 7 minute taxi ride from the station. There are lovely walks along paths right outside and along the river. The hotel has a spacious interior and many staff are very helpful and speak excellent English. Mr Suzuki was very helpful during our stay. He collected maps and timetables for our trip to the train museum which was out of town. He also booked restaurants for us. The Starlight restaurant on the top floor is worth dining in. Breakfast buffet was plentiful and varied and well priced in the restaurant on the ground floor. Although slightly dated, I thought the hotel offered good value as opposed to the newly built Nikko where we also dined one evening. The rooms here were clean and practical and the staff always smiled. Rooms which overlook the river are worth the slightly higher rate for the view they provide, especially at night. I recommend it for the dated charm!

“Comfortable hotel in good location ”

Throughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Okura Niigata. Rooms are old but comfortable. Service is excellent, breakfast was great with such fresh delicious food. Hotel is close to shopping areas and a range of restaurants.

decent prices by Japanese standards. old hotel n it shows, carpet in 1 elevator very stained. do not seem to be terribly busy, locatino is reat s close to Furumachi n 1 can walk back towards train station approx 15 mins walk 1 way. lawson close by along wit local small mall wit a marudai supermarke… more
