We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, April 4-5, 2023 at room #2712. This hotel was recommended to us by a friend from Niigata whom we were visiting. We are told this hotel is owned by the JAL group and they have big function/banquet rooms so a lot of conventions are held there. The rooms are clean, staff are all courteous and helpful. The hotel is located in the Bandai area. The fishmarket where we had brunch of those yummy jumbo oysters is right across the hotel. The hotel is probably one of the tallest buildings in Niigata City and it has an observatory at the top floor where you can have a good view of the City. Not too many choices in their breakfast buffet but it is ok.

“Tallest hotel in town”

Hotel nikko is the tallest hotel in town, you can see wonderful view from your room. Room itself is a bit old but still spotless. Location is bad, you can only take the shuttle bus to go to the city center, there is also a market next to the hotel and it is worth visiting.

One good thing about this hotel is the view. The building is said to be the tallest one on Honshu island that's facing the Sea of Japan. Every room is located above 22nd floor so you are guaranteed to get a high floor room. There's also a free observation deck on the top level. While the deck is open to the public, you get easiest access to it as you can take the elevator up directly from your room level any time while the deck is open. Can't complain about the view. On the other hand, the location of this hotel is very inconvenient for tourists. There's literally nothing nearby, which is pretty rare for a Japanese city hotel. There's a convenience store in the building that's open until 7PM or so. After that the nearest store of any kind is like 8-10 minutes walk away on a dark road. The only onsite dinner option is a Chinese restaurant with food portioned to be shared. While the hotel can be accessed by bus, the service is very limited at night and you may need a transfer to get to where you want anyway. Unless you are driving, you may rely on taxis a lot. Fortunately there were always some taxis standing by at the entrance while I was there. The room also left much to be desired. While the hotel is said to be of 4 stars, the room certainly is not at that level. It was very simple and much smaller than what I expected despite I booked the largest single room type. This is one of the most expensive hotels in the city, so I was a bit surprised by how unimpressive the room was. The AC also didn't work super well and kept the room hot. The service was good and the breakfast was nice. One thing to note is that the lobby is located on the 3rd floor and the signs isn't super obvious. Overall I think this hotel is a good option for people who are driving or want to get away from city life, but it's not the most convenient hotel for general tourists.
