“Decent place, great location”

We spent 3 nights in Kyoto and wanted to spend one night in a ryokan. Hirashin was clean, comfortable, and provided us the experience of in-room tea table, sleeping on a mat, and bath house. We also chose the breakfast option, which was a traditional Japanese breakfast, so be prepared for miso soup, rice, and fish and veggie dishes. I enjoyed the breakfast, my wife did not (personal tastes). Hirashin is in a good location, easy walk to the market, several excellent local restaurants, walkable to Gion during the day. We bussed to the Philosopher's Walk, toured the large temple at the start of the Walk, then spent rest of the day walking back along the Walk, thru Gion, lunch on the river, thru the market, etc. Three-stars is not meant to reflect any negatives, but Hirashin is truly just an "average" hotel in the Kyoto area.

Location: 8/10 Cleanliness: 8/10 Service: 6/10 Wi-Fi: 2/10 Comfort: 8/10 Good location, within walking distance of several subway lines. Lots of food options nearby. Service was friendly but can be a bit slow at times. Check in was at 4pm (and not a moment earlier). Wi-Fi was free but quite useles… more

Service was friendly but can be a bit slow at times. Check in was at 4pm (and not a moment earlier). Wi-Fi was free but quite useless with constant drop outs and slow performance. The room was spacious for 2 people and kept clean each day, although the venue is showing some wear and tear throughout. The hot baths in the basement was well enjoyed after a long day of sight seeing. We paid 33,000 yen per night which is expensive for a venue of this quality, however, this is peak season and the price was in line with increased demand. Overall, I was reasonably satisfied with my visit, but would not look to stay here again.

“Ryokan rooms in a modern block ?”

Wanted to try a ryokan, this wasn't really the traditional building we had expected. All the staff were very friendly and the location is ideal to explore the Nishiki market and surrounding area. The rooms are traditional but housed in a modern shell plus there are Onsen in the basement. Our room had a bit of wear / damage, the air con was noisy and didn't cool the room at all. We'd opted for the evening meal in our room, which all came at once, we weren't sure what many of the dishes were or what order to eat them. Breakfast was all Asian, fish, rice porridge, chicken / tofu broth. It was an experience but for us, the room without the food would have been a better option.
