“Tiny room, bit tired - but handy for sights and nightlife”

Having read a handful of reviews for this place it fitted what we needed - and also proved pretty accurate. It didn't present the greatest value for money, but the city was in demand when we stayed and this place was available and proved handy for lots of cool and traditional restaurants, both upmarket and value - without busting our rooms budget. It was also walkable from key attractions such as the geisha district and the shogun houses, and a short bus ride from the station. The room we had was very small, dated and - with a medium suitcase plus one smaller one - took some navigation when getting up in the night or getting ready to move out for the day. We didn't try the breakfast in the adjacent diner because of timings, so cannot comment, but found chain cafes nearby. All in all, I'd say this suited our needs for a low budget hotel in a handy location, but you could do well to show around or spend a little more if you require more space or something more up to date. One final word for the check-in and cleaning staff who are friendly and helpful, plus the coin-operated laundry facilities, which proved handy for us mid-trip.

It is a very typical hotel in Japan. But Smile hotel is dirty and expensive. When we came, we had a pet bottle from the previous guests in our room. There was a lot of dust. Fortunately, they clean the rooms every day. The bathroom was broken and water was pouring onto the floor of the sink. Bad breakfast, poor quality, missing fruit.

CONS: - The entire hotel -- from its lobby to the hotel room -- looks dated. - In-room lighting is not that bright. - There are not enough electric sockets in the rooms.

I'm not sure how much we paid for this hotel as it was part of a package, but it felt a bit down-market and seedy. Everything is a bit old and scraped, the room was smaller than average, the staff were not so friendly, and there was no safe in the room. The aircon was very hot and when we asked if it could be turned down we were told to open the window - which we did in order to avoid suffocating, and then had to listen to the Bing-bong of the audible pedestrian signals which went off every 30 seconds or so. That said, there was nothing really wrong. The hotel is in quite a convenient location, particularly if you are looking for all night karaoke and/or dodgy nightclubs, and easy to get to. There is parking which costs Y1100 per night which is good if you have a car. The sheets seemed clean, the bed was averagely comfortable and the crack in the bathroom basin really did us no harm. Assuming it's cheap, it's probably reasonable value for the price.
