Located uphill in Yamashiro onsen. The hotel looked a bit old but still grand. Check in service was good. We sere led to our room, which is quite big by any Japan standard. It is a 10 tatami living room, plus a twin bed, a side seating area by the window, and a nice large entrance area. Though the hotel is a bit old and dated, I can see that the hotel is trying hard to make up by better service. The hotel provides a 50 minutes family onsen session to us during our stay. The family onsen is very nice, with drinks, towel and amenities all stocked up. Our dinner was served in the room. We were served one whole Echizen crab each person, making us very busy to take out the crab meat. It was a sumptuous meal with various good ingredients. For the price we paid, it is a good deal that we have.

The property itself is a bit aged which is reflected in some of the facilities (e.g. changing room within the onsen) though they managed to renovate some of the guestrooms. We had in-room dinner one night and the staff has provided their service at a very high standard. The old lady who served our dinner basically set our table in the room to the format same as if we were eating in the restaurant and she was very eager to integrate with us. We arrived last minute for the dinner and she didn't mind to stay a bit late to serve us until we finished our meal. Thanks to her professionalism and friendliness and the high quality food we had a very enjoyable in-room dining experience. The outdoor traditional onsen was another memorable part as we were able to enjoy a quiet soak with just our own group of 3 in the pool. Despite the aged property, the hotel did not fail to impress us with extreme perfection and professionalism and I must admit that their long history of hospitality is what constitutes to their hospitality spirit.

This ryokan is quite old, but all the staff are sincerely trying their best. From the aged lobby area to the patch repairs in the toilet and rusty railings outside the balcony, it seems that the ryokan is struggling in terms of maintenance. The hotel is a short drive away from the main street up a gentle slope along a line of similarly old ryokans. The one next to this ryokan appears to have been closed down for several months and was in state of disrepair. Our room overlooked a disused pool which was filled with stagnant water and dead leaves. The onsen area was sufficient but use of the newer private onsen came at a rather pricey cost. What I meant by the ryokan trying their best was in terms of the quality and variety of food, cleanliness and comfort of the room. The price range is mid level so if you are keen to visit this area and looking for a place to experience a Japanese ryokan, this place is sufficient and provides professional Japanese hospitality with a team of friendly elderly staff. However, we went on a Friday during sakura season and found that most of the shops were closed. There wasn't much to do or see and we didn't get to try the handmade soba noodles the area is known for. It seems that the area as well as the ryokan has seen better days.
