Our first trip to Japan and our first ryokan experience. Never to be forgotten! We were welcomed warmly and assisted with understanding what was required of us culturally, removal of shoes, wearing yukatas, onsen procedures. Our group had a guide who helped with translation as staff were not English-speaking. We loved the ambience of our room, beautifully presented, spacious, with green tea making facility, even TV (which was a surprise and not used). The bathroom was very welcome with a shower/bath "room", accessories and toiletries replenished daily. Our breakfast and dinner was included and each was a work of art to look at, even better to eat! The onsen was a delight, so calming, and itself an experience to remember forever. Wifi was included in the bar lounge overlooking a pond with waterfall, greenery and Koi. Stayed for three days but wished it had been more to explore the scenic mountains.

Hodakaso-sangetsu is nestled within the Okuhida Onsen Village area and is without a doubt, the best experience we've had this entire trip. The facade is that of a modern hotel building, but the rooms are still very authentically japanese ryokan rooms. We got there by car, and the moment we parked, the staff were there to receive us and were there to attend to our every need. We were escorted up to our rooms, and taught to put on our yukatas for our onsen experience. They have two onsens within the facility - one in the other wing, separate onsens with both indoor and outdoor onsens, and one OUTSIDE the building, a short walk across, with mixed and female onsens. if you're deathly afraid of the cold they even provide thick yukatas outer wears and snow boots for that short maybe... 5 m walk across. we opted for the half board option and the meals we had(breakfast and dinner) was impeccable. i don't eat beef and i didn't inform them before hand(my bad) and they immediately changed my set meal to a seafood one. they also have chinese-speaking staff on hand to explain to you the dishes served. would definitely come here again.

“A wonderful place for total relaxation”

We were there for 5 nights and it is very near to Mount Hataka ropeway (about 10 - 15 minutes drive). When we reached the place on the 1st night (we reached there almost dark), the hotel man waited for us. They unloaded our luggages to the room and even took their time to explain where to get the dinner with little time concerned (the surrounding restaurants closed their shops at 4pm). This really showed how details they are when come to their hospitality and the way they do things. The Japanese Breakfast is superb and only a bit setback when they tried their best to serve you American breakfast on the 3rd day. ( trying not to make you bored). Staff are friendly and informative despite some language barriers when come to communication. They even get the Chinese staff to explain to us and places to go. Facilities - Onsen is very good with sauna and basic amenities. They have beautiful open onsen areas. No Wifi in the room and reception can be weak in the reception areas. Very nice deco in the hotel with pretty pond landscape with big fishes swimming in the winter. The room is big and well maintenaned One of the service beyond my expectation was that it was snowing the 2nd day and you see the staff actually cleared the thick snow on the car and turn on the heater before we stepped into the car every morning. My suggestion to the future travelers who are like us, just like places for relaxation, this is the place for you. However, you need a car to drive to here as transportation to anywhere could be a challenge. I would still love to go back and next time I will bring my only daughter along to enjoy this unforgettable hotel that my wife and I have been.

We had visited this ryokan few year ago and we had a very pleasant experience here! We were looking forwards to come back again, but we were quite disappointed after this visit. The outdoor onsen and the room standard are still same as our last visit, but their food taste has become from good to bad. They used to serve very good beef, but not this time anymore. And the rest of the food all not nice. We won’t come back again!
