“Very basic hotel, but great location”

So we chose this hotel because it was the most affordable during our stay due to Obama visiting the area for G7 summit. So we chose this hotel because it was the most affordable during our stay due to Obama visiting the area for G7 summit. It wasn't our first choice but it turns out it was the best one we could have gotten considering what we wanted to do in Fukuoka. The hotel is a bit far from the train station especially if you have a lot of luggage. So you might as well take a taxi. It's hard to find if it's your first time there as the hotels name is plastered on the side of the hotel in Japanese. The only indication that it's the right hotel is the fact that the taxi stopped there and the name is written in English at the entrance. Front staff spoke little English but well enough to understand what we needed. The hotel itself is cozy enough, the rooms weren't that big but it's functional and the bathroom is ok. A big no-no was the fact that there were small stains on the curtains though and my wife waid there were stains on the comforter. Location wise it was great! there were a lot of restaurants in the area, lots of ramen places, sushi, etc. there were a lot of hostess bars too so if you're into that kind of thing then great. Walking distance to the Canal mall and Yatai food stalls. Also walking distance to Don Quijote shopping mall to buy those trinkets.

Breakfast is a set menu, 3 different options available, being 2 Japanese and 1 western style, food was not bad. Location is handy, in front of the river and 400m away from Hakata Kawabata subway station.

The hotel is a 10 minute walk (approx.) from Hakata station and is relatively easy to find. The hotel is a 10 minute walk (approx.) from Hakata station and is relatively easy to find. Once you arrive outside however you will pause in confusion (if you don't know Japanese) as the name isn't written in English so you'll be momentarily unsure if you're stepping in to the right hotel. The neighborhood is okay but there does seem to be a few hostess clubs near by so the vibe isn't exactly 'sophisticated'. There are also a lot of ramen restaurants very near by so if this is what you're in Fukuoka for then the location is great! The front desk staff I checked in with didn't speak English so this might be an issue if you don't speak basic Japanese. You'll be offered a tooth brush and razor at the front desk when you check in so just decline if unneeded. The receptionist I checked in with seemed a little startled by a non-Japanese checking in and being given the card key but then no indication as to where he elevators were wasn't too impressive. The rooms are small! You'll be hard pressed to be able to turn a round with a backpack on and not bump into something. They are however clean and have the basics such as a fridge, flat screen tv, and light controls by the bed. The (semi) double bed is also quite small (I'm 6') so you'll be trying to sleep diagonally across it and if you're not used the Japanese style pillow look for the more 'western' one on the shelf by the door. This is what's known as a 'business' hotel in Japan. That means it's primarily used by business persons so it's function over form with just the basics on offer. It's not recommended for families due to its location and small room sizes. As it's mainly used by business people expect to be woken up around 7:00 a.m. by other guests leaving their rooms (there is little by way of sound insulation). Overall a good functional 'get what you pay for' hotel' but best suited to a single traveler passing through the city for the one night.

After spending $60 on one night in the gorgeous Takakura Hotel, I was looking for big things from the $130 per night Hakata Nakasu. Upon entering, the reception area was nice and clean and the reception was helpful, even when there was a problem with one of my cards (stupid visa, argh!!). When we got to the room, we were somewhat disappointed. I expect small in Japan, so the size wasn't the issue. The bed seemed small compared to what we'd just experienced and the sheets were hard. The room was pretty cold (it had sort of an on/off heater system, rather than the thermostat that we'd had before) and I almost broke my neck when laid down on the pillow, it seemed to be filled up with rock-hard beans (they changed this upon request). The bathroom was small yet adequate, but the walls were really thin. My girlfriend and I joked that we were in a caravan. The shower was well equipped and hot, so I cant complain too much. It also meant that when the drunken Japanese man next door got home at 4am, I could hear him knocking on the door and shouting for someone to let him in, for the full 25 minutes.... :ㅣ The location is good, its a 2-3 min walk from Nakasukawabata subway station and is within a short walk to Tenjin area. You have to walk into the car-park to get into the building. All in all, I think the hotel was adequate for our stay, but the price was too high for what we got.
