Great location! Near the train station, so it was easy to catch the train to our southern destination after our time in Rome. The metro doesn't have many stops, but we used it to get to the northern part of the city. Great metropolitan area to be in with many restaurants within walking distance. When we arrived early in the morning our room was not ready, but they have an area upstairs where we took our bags to change and freshen up - then they held our bags for the day until we returned later. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good! We would stay again!

Our first two nights in Rome were spent at the Hotel Gioberti. It wasn’t the original choice with the package we chose form our tour operator, but they changed it about two weeks prior to leaving and advised us via email with our detailed itinerary and vouchers. Not sure why the original place was like, but to honest I’m kind of glad they changed it. Hotel Gioberti is in the centre of Rome on Via Gioberti about a block away from the Roma Termini, the main railway station. This is a convenient location for both transit and exploring most of the city. There is a Metro or subway station near the railway station as well as a major bus interchange. Several attractions such as Piazza della Repubblica, Museo Nazionale Romano, Terme di Diocleziano, and Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore are an easy walk to. In fact, we could see the spire of the Basillica from our room. Other attractions such as the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps are a bit farther out but still walkable, if not a short subway ride away. We did in fact walk to the last two. The area also has numerous stores and small shops and stalls selling snacks water, electronics and souvenirs within a block or more in addition to the shops in the railway station. There is also one grocery market a block away and another closer to the Basilica. There are several assorted cheap places to eat nearby or in the railway station including chain franchises like McDonalds and KFC. To the south west walking towards the Basilica are several streets full of moderately priced restaurants. The hotel is listed as a four-star property and has 90 rooms over six floors. The building was constructed in the 19th century one and appears to have been recently updated as have the rooms. Part of this was evident in the large glass elevator off the lobby and the wide marble staircase. Check in was fast and easy and required our Passports and a credit card, for which the Rome room tax of about 30 Euros ($46.38 Cdn) was deducted at check out. The room wasn’t ready so we grabbed a quick lunch nearby and when we returned were given our room keys and discovered our luggage had been delivered from the secure storage room to our room. Our room was on the” first” floor, second floor really and was a corner unit facing west overlooking the intersection of Via Gioberti and Via Filippo Turati. As I noted the room appeared to be recently updated. A narrow hallway lead into it with the bathroom on one side and the other containing a large open closet with attached hangers and several drawers. Past this was a small desk, and in between both the safe and small mini fridge. The safe was of the modern type with a programable keypad and large enough to hold my tablet and DSLR camera in addition to our Passports and wallets etc. Past this was the main room area with the Queen-sized bed. There were three large windows all which could be opened and had heavy metal shutters that could be closed. The alcoves for the windows made convenient storage spaces for our suitcases. As it was October we never tried the air conditioning so the ability to get a cross breeze through the open windows was a nice option. There were plenty of electrical outlets including two on either side of the bed for charging phones etc. The large TV was mounted on the wall opposite the bed. There was a good selection of local and other European channels and it was smart TV with an alarm feature and the ability to stream several Internet channels. The bed was comfortable and there was an ample supply of spare bedding in the closet if needed. The bathroom was rather large and as noted recently renovated. There was a large walk-in shower. There were no issues with either hot water or water pressure during our stay. There was an ample supply of thick towels, changed by the maid as needed and a good supply of basic toiletries. Breakfast was included with our stay and was served on the roof top terrace. It was the standard hotel continental breakfast buffet with a selection of assorted fruits, breads, cereals and cold cuts and some scrambled eggs. There was a selection of juices and of course coffee. One had the option of eating either inside or outside on the covered terrace with views of the city. We only enjoyed breakfast one morning here as we needed to leave early our second morning for a tour to Pompeii. The hotel staff arranged a breakfast bag to go for each of us at checkout. This was full of juice boxes, and assorted fruits, jams and breads and toasts. Basically, it more or less lasted as snacks for several days. Aside from the breakfast, there was no hotel bar or restaurant although as I said there were several in the immediate area including one next door, in the same building, the Santa Maria Osteria - Ristorante Pizzeria. There was wifi throughout the hotel and even extending to the bar/restaurant next door. Logging in was easy and it supported multiple platforms such as both our phones and my tablet. There were only a couple of real negatives about Hotel Gioberti and both of them I noticed in other reviews, but are worth repeating. Some would describe the immediate area around the hotel as a bit rundown or sketchy. That said we ever felt uneasy walking about even in the evenings, but did see a high proportion of transients and normal basic precautions should be observed. Roem Termini has a reputation for being a hub for pickpockets or so we were told. Also, there was a large degree of street noise apparent, but this could have been because we were on a lower floor and initially left the windows open> once closed this seemed to diminish. My only complaint was the roof top terrace area was only open during the mornings for breakfast. Personally, I would have loved to watch the sunset from up here as well as enjoy a relaxing drink in the evening.

Excellent location - near the train station. Staffs were friendly. Room was spacious and clean. Comfortable beds. There were numerous restaurants within walking distance. Rich buffet breakfast with different kinds of breads, patisseries, fruits, yogurts, meats and cheeses. If the breakfast buffet can provide earlier, it will be better. Little bit trouble to adjust the temperature for the shower. No re-fill - bottles of water.
