I stayed here recently with a group of walkers however when i arrived I'd broken my wrist and arm and so was waiting to be repatriated to the UK. The hotel is very central and only a few minutes walk from the sassi and although the rooms are small they contained everything you needed and were spotlessly clean. Breakfast was plentiful and good. The staff were however the best bit - they couldn't have been more helpful and kinder. Particular thanks to Maria for her efforts finding me a doctor and hospital and cab to the airport. I've never stayed in hotel with such great staff before. One day soon I shall return to Matera to spend more time there and I will definitely be returning to Il Piccolo Albergo..

We arrived in the night. Tired and nerved from not working navi. Found this little gem by chance. Very helpful staff. Confi beds. All is small but very clean and really central. Breakfast was also much better then what is usually offered in italy as a standard. We even had warm croissants. Tasty fruits too. 3 bed room inclusive breakfast for 100 €. Decided to stay for another night. Overall we are very happy that we have discovered this little hotel. Would recommend it further to any average size people:). If you are larger better to look for more spaced alternatives, as shaver cabin and the bathroom is really tiny.

First off, Matera is a wonderful town to visit given its history, architecture and location. This albergo is a five mins easy walk from the train station. It's a comfortable 10 mins walk to the sassi area. Relatively flat. Quiet street. Safe. Restaurant options are closeby or a short walk away. And a plus that it takes credit card, as it seems most small B&Bs took only cash. Room and bathroom size is comfortable for the budget. Parquet floors. Tall ceilings. Clean. There is a small fridge in the room. Wifi works well throughout. Quiet - noise outside the room didn't travel inside. Ample breakfast buffet - deli meat, cheese, fresh fruit, cereal, milk, yogurt, juice, hot drinks, and bread. There is a decent open air market not far either if you are looking for something different. Be warned that there are stairs and no elevators, but the stairs are wide and manageable (not steep!). Staff is very helpful with options on restaurants and things to do in the Matera area, particularly the Albanian student who spoke excellent English. She even called the room to warn us about resto hours. All in all, this place is a good option for the budget minded traveller.

This hotel is a very good choice in Matera; especially for the price paid. There are a few drawbacks. First the good news. For vacationers, this hotel is well place very close to the Sassi and on the edge of the newer parts of town where one can shop. There are good restaurants within easy walking distances. The room was very clean, and had great towels, linens shampoo and soap The wifi worked very well. The TV worked fine, but there is just a limited number of stations. Breakfast in the morning was very good -- fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, bread, meat and cheese. They made fresh coffee with steamed milk to your liking; and warmed a croissant for you. In addition, they made fresh cakes the evening -- you can smell them baking when you come in -- which are served at breakfast. The staff are wonderful. They were very helpful with identifying restaurants, directions, and anything else one needed help with. The hotel does not have its' own parking. There is, however, free parking on the road for the hotel; and we were able to get parking on the street. We noticed that there were free spots available in the evenings, but note we were not there in high season. Surrounding streets have both free and paid parking -- which you can get depends on your luck. There is a parking garage a couple of blocks away should all else fail -- the staff provided a map showing where it is. The showers are very small -- a large male will find them uncomfortable. But the water pressure is good and there is plenty of hot water. The bed is comfortable and had good linens, but the street noise does travel up to the room. In general, the streets are quiet so this is not a problem, but the street sweeper does come by in the morning -- this will wake up late sleepers. The biggest negative is that the hotel does look worn. The carpet is a bit frayed; the rooms and hallways desperately need a coat of paint. Note that everything was clean -- it just didn't look very attractive as it was scuffed up. The fixtures in the room all looked dated; although they all worked well. So if you are looking for a hotel that works well; this is the place; but if you are bothered by a worn look, you will be disappointed.
