“Central Location”

The hotel is located close to the railway station and public transport, restaurants and places of interest, we stayed for 3 nights close to hop on hop off bus stop as well. Staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms average but our room had a great view over the surrounding suburbs very rustic.

The Byron is very close to Santa Maria Novella station and is easy to find. We arrived there before 12 noon and were pleasantly surprised to get a room right away. The staff at the reception were not overly friendly, but the chack in was quick and we went searching for our room on the second floor, 209, if I remember correctly. The room was more spacious than we expected. A good sized wardrobe, smallish tv (channels only in Italian but that is the norm in Italy), and a compact bathroom. Mattresses a bit firm for me, but husband was pleased. Views actually very nice, towards a very florentine backyard. Very quiet, didn't wake up during the night at all, although the rooms facing the street I'm sure are very noisy. Although our room was relatively clean, the corridors were dusty and had specks of dirt even when we dropped at our room just after the cleaning rounds had been made. Lift and staircase looked dodgy and were in a desperate need for a refurb. And although there is a lift, I couldn't reccommend this place for those with mobility problems, our room was accesible by lift BUT there were several steps to the actual floor where our room was. Breakfast was quite good but very much on the sweet side. I had trouble finding anything savoury, so I just settled for a toast, juice and a cappuccino from a (temperamental) machine. After we had settled in our room and were ready to go about the town I thought I'd ask the receptionist for a map. There were actually four staff members behind the desk, but none of them made eye contact with me until I just decided to randomly target the female member and asked for the map. Somehow I got the impression that the staff seemed a bit resigned. Perhaps because there were so many large groups of loud (in a good way, though) students with their (understandably) frazzled teachers / leaders. Sort of like they were expecting negative feedback at any time. Hotel Byron served our purposes quite well. The room was more spacious than expected from a 2 star hotel, it was quite clean, the shower had good pressure and temperature and we slept well, facing the backyard. Nice, if firm bed and clean sheets and towels. The breakfast will keep you going, if a bit sugar shocked with all those sweet buns and cakes. Would we return? Hard to say. It is not quite the "Demon Hotel" many have described. If we got a really good deal and were offered the same room, probably. We paid silly small money and didn't expect much. And that was what we got. Two nights' relatively quiet sleep and a shower. No more, no less.
