“Nice hotel, full of character, but a bit out of the way”

The hotel is situated in an elegant 18th century mansion. The main building and grounds are full of character. There is a nice clean pool with a poolside bar. We opted for a cheaper room in an annexe. It was small but clean and comfortable enough, and air-conditioned. Tea and coffee were provided but not replenished every day. The electricity goes off when your key card is removed from the slot, which meant that we couldn't recharge anything while we were out. We didn't dine there but the breakfast is pretty good, with plenty of choice, and outside seating. The default coffee was very weak, but you can order additional espressos, cappuccinos, etc, at no extra charge. The staff were efficient without being particularly informative when we enquired about this and that. In terms of the sights of Naples, you're a bit out of the way - except for Herculaneum, which is a 10 to 15 minute walk. To get to the hotel from central Naples, ignore everyone telling you to take the grubby, clanking Circumvesuviana train. Instead take a train from the much nicer Line 2 of the metro to Portici-Ercolano (about every half-hour), but be careful as not every train goes that far. Amazingly, every train we took was on time!! From there it's about 15 minutes' walk to the hotel, partly uphill. In daylight hours on weekdays you can cut through the park and university grounds. General tip for walking around Naples: You'll need a decent pair of shoes with a good tread, especially if, like me, you suffer from a bad back. There's a lot of rough and uneven paving - some of it by design.

Villa Signorini is an aristocratic mansion from the mid-18th century. It’s had an interesting life and surely holds many secrets. How many years past its prime the property was one of the secrets. Magnificent high ceilings, ornate cornices, genuine antique furniture, beautiful features – all requiring renovation. It’s a bit like looking at a priceless painting before it was restored. We had a larger room, views of Sorrento, Capri and the Bay of Naples. Perfectly comfortable. There’s a decent restaurant at the back, not expensive, where you can sit on a terrace and feed the cats. Accommodation in Naples is usually a chain hotel with a boring standard. Herculaneum - the town is poor and scruffy - is 12 minutes by car or 30 minutes by rail from Naples Garibaldi station. I’ll take Villa Signorini over Naples every day. Staff are stand-offish, but that applies to most Italian hotels. I found it good sport to make them actually stand up from their desk and come to the counter. You’ll need a car or taxi. The hotel is at the edge of walking distance to the excavation or even the station. And there are multiple dangers; if the uneven paving and high gutters don’t get you, the dog poo certainly will.

Courteous welcome, and directions on how to park the car (in an inner courtyard in the shade of small trees). Rooms range from functional to Italianate suites, our room was spotless and cool. Pool and gardens all good. Meals all well executed; the Neapolitans are proud of their cuisine. Only downside is the dilapidated area in which it's located, but the hotel itself is excellent 👌

The hotel is a huge WOW absolutely stunning, everything we wanted with the Italian character. Once you walk through the main gateway you are transported back in time . The restaurant staff were lovely, chatty and funny . We had lunch ,on our first day of our 3 night stay , it was very enjoyable and also ate in the restaurant first night . The food was very good although the menu wasn't very extensive, things like gnocchi and pizza would be nice . I have only given 3 stars due to the hotel being overrun by 20 or so school children who ran a mock of a night till 3:30 on our first 2 nights . When I complained after first night although they went and told the adult supervisors I got the impression they weren't bothered. Response from the lady on reception was " they are on holiday and are children" Yes we were also on a quiet holiday ! Location of hotel is in a very run down area it is very central for walking to train station and Hercolanum site plus a leisurely walk to Torre del Greco. Once you've gone down the road to the Golden Mile the area improves. Take plenty of mosquito control we were eaten alive . With a guarantee of no school parties being in the hotel we would definitely stay here again armed with our mosquito repellent
