“A great mid-winter vacation at the Dan Neptune Hotel, Eilat”

We had an excellent stay at the Neptune. It is a 5-star hotel, part of the prestigous Dan Hotel chain. Our room had a balcony overlooking the 25 meter heated pool with the Red Sea beyond. The room was a generous size, clean, with an upholstered arm chair that doubles as a spare single bed. The bathroom had a big mirror and a glass-door step in shower. The soap and other amenities were renewed as needed, and fresh, soft towels were provided generously. The curtains completely darkened the room if desired, the room was thoroughly cleaned and the sliding door to the balcony was spotless. The large size double bed was comfy with lots of pillows and a warm coverlet; the closet had adequate shelves and hanging room and extra hangers were provided promptly when requested. Every room has an electric kettle, two glass mugs, bottled mineral water and coffee, tea bags, sugar and sweetener for making hot drinks. There is a small fridge and safe as well. The buffet breakfasts were extraordinary! The dining hall staff were very helpful and willing, and kept the buffet constantly replenished and beautifully presented, not easy with lots of kids helping themselves. In addition to manned espresso machine, the hotel had recently installed two self-service coffee machines, so there was no wait to have a hot drink. The buffet had several fresh salads, as well as cut up vegetables for making your own, and several freshly made salad dressings, olive oil, lemon juice, fresh lemon quarters, and nice touches like bulgar and roasted seeds. Fresh cut citrus fruit rounded out the selection. Two chefs prepared omelets to order with fresh eggs, fresh sliced mushrooms, onions, parsley and grated cheese. Additional warm dishes included scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs, mini sliced baked eggplant, fresh pancakes or waffles, baked cakes including delicious warm cheese cake, croissants, borekas, and various specialties like lasagne and fresh pizza. There was always a selection of yogurt, sour cream, cold pudding deserts, as well as fresh cold hotel specialties like malaby and a whipped cream-cheese cake that was heavenly. There was a good selection of sliced hard cheeses, both salty and mild including a great fresh ricotta and white cheeses, like cottage cheese, white cheese with scallions or fresh dill. Tuna chunks, tuna salad, at least two kinds of herring, green and black olives, pickles, halva cubes and every kind of condiment were always available. Cereals included corn flakes, granola and 2 other choices, cold milk and cold chocolate milk on tap, chocolate spread, apricot and strawberry preserves, syrup for pancakes and waffles, in short, just about anything you could possibly want for breakfast. The hotel had many families with children, which resulted in some spills and dropped pancakes, and the dining staff always cleared things up immediately. They kept the buffet looking tempting and fresh at all times even with literally hundreds of diners at once. The pleasant atmosphere in the dining room is to the credit of the kitchen staff, the servers, and especially the clean-up crew who were happy to fulfill any request, fetch spare silverware, napkins and salt shakers. Rashid especially was always available to help the other crew members and to be alert to any needed spot cleaning. The ladies who worked preparing hot drinks were always pleasant and obliging, even with grumpy guests who were anxioua for their morning caffeine. We also had a dinner one evening that was really remarkable. On Friday evening, in honor of the Jewish sabbath the tables had white tablecloths and napkins, and wine glasses with individual bottles of wine and grape juice for each guest and glass pitchers of ice water on each table. The first courses incuded delicious composed salads (I tasted three) that were fresh and tasty, homemade chopped liver and gefilte fish with horseradish sauce, two soups as well as several couscous dishes. Special fresh sabbath bread (hallah) was served in every size and shape to accommodate singles, couples or families. The fish options included baked fish, delicious hot tuna, fish croquets. There were lots of side dishes, roasted potatoes, green beans, plain rice, pilaf with almonds and dried fruit. The meat dishes were really outstanding: artichoke hearts stuffed with ground beef, barbecued roasted beef, cold sliced roast beef, lamb riblets that were out of this world, roasted chicken quarters, a variety of stews, ground beef served in a pastry casing and a kids' section with hot dogs, pasta, ketchup and chips. Fresh fruit was provided and literally hundreds of kinds of desserts -- tartlets, mini napoleons, chocolate-dipped toasted almonds, 4 varieties of macrons, mini lemon meringue pies, chocolate truffles, and they were all replenished constantly with a smiling lady going back and forth to the kitchen with a cart full of trays that were refilled as fast as they were emptied. Just amazing! I spent hours at the pool, the loungers were shaded by huge parasols and small tables were provided for drinks or accessories with soothing background music. There were two life guards on duty from 8:00 am when the pool opened to 4:45 pm when it closed, and a ready supply of huge freshly laundered beach towels. There were two kiddy pools as well, but it was a little cool for young children. The adult pool was full of bigger kids playing and splashing. The life guards also made sure that adults swimming laps were able to do so without battling the children. The lobby was large and had plenty of comfortable chairs, with a bar, self-serve cold water, with convenient toilets, including one for the handicapped. There were entertainment programs a couple of times a week in the lobby and on the pool patio. The Neptune has a great location, right on the boardwalk at the seafront, and it has a lot of parking areas. It is close to the popular Mall HaYam, and there are fast food spots, restaurants and shops all around. Everything a visitor needs is within walking distance, convenience stores, minimarkets, all kinds of shops and boutiques, amusements... In short, we had a wonderful time with mild weather, a roomy accommodation, a beautiful view and a friendly and helpful staff. the mid winter prices were a bargain, and we felt very well served by the hotel and its staff. There were lots of families at the hotel and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. I warmly recommend the Neptune to anyone who wants a relaxing vacation on the gorgeous seafront of sunny Eilat.

We arrived as a couple at the hotel and naturally booked a double room. However, the bed we received was made up of two separate double mattresses, which prevented us from enjoying as a couple. The feeling was like sleeping alone in twin beds. At check-in, they explained that this is how most beds in the hotel are set up, so be aware in advance that you may not sleep comfortably as a couple. Additionally, we were given a room facing the sea (as requested). Please note that sea-facing rooms suffer from unbearable noise from trance music at high intensity for most hours of the day, which prevents relaxation and peace in the room since the windows are not soundproofed against such noise.
