“Intercity Hotel in Mainz!”
As always, the quality of the Intercity Hotel chain does not fail to impress. The hotel is a comfortable haven from travel stress, with a flair that only a hotel in Mainz could offer.

My family and I were looking for accomodation in Mainz and booked this hotel as a base to explore the Upper Middle Rhine. The one truly convenient thing about the location is the hauptbahnhof (main train station) and links to public transportation. In fact, you could get there directly from the flughafen or Hbf. There are some bus stops and a tram stop just across from the hotel. It's a bit further away from the historic city center which is roughly a 20 minute walk or so depending on how brisk your pace is. You can take tram (or bus) #6 and get off at Schillerplatz. From there it's not that far to the main tourist attractions. There aren't any restaurants or grocery stores within a short distance of the hotel so you will have to either walk to the train station or past it about 10 minutes. Please make sure to watch for the bike lanes at all times as these road can be quite busy. The hotel itself was clean, modern, and quite comfortable. The staff was direct and efficient but not very warm. I didn't receive a single "guten morgen", guten tag", or "guten nacht", from a smiling face like I have in past hotels in Germany. In fact, I don't recall anyone looking up from their computer screens at all when we came in or out. We booked two rooms. Mine was comfortable for the most part. The decor is minimalist with little in the way of style. The AC was quite weak and I found it stuffy at times despite it being set to the highest level out. My parents' room didn't seem to be as hot though. It was mid September when temperatures were about 75°F (23°C) so I couldn't imagine how hot it would be like in July or August. The window only opened a small amount but let in cool air at night. Unfortunately it let it city noise as well from trains, ambulances, people yelling in the streets, etc. They let you know that the AC will not work if the window is open as well. My bed was comfy and on the soft side just the way I like it.... the pillows and blankets were fluffy. I took advantage of the small mini fridge and appreciated the 2 free waters that were provided. The bathroom was modern and very clean. Body gel/hair wash is provided as with most mid range hotels in Europe and the blow dryer looked to be of high quality. The water in the shower was hot and steamy just as I hoped. Wifi was adequate but each day you were required you to connect to the network, open browser, and choose the option to connect without joining a membership. Breakfast was pretty decent here. They had an adequate spread of meats, cold cuts, cheeses, eggs, baked goods, juices, and coffees. The coffee machine and juices were outstanding. Come early as the orange juice wasn't refilled til one morning we were there. One worker appeared very stressed and annoyed when I or anyone else was standing behind him to wait my turn to grab something from the buffet. I do think that 19 euros per person is a bit steep for what you're actually getting though. I've traveled all over Germany (and Europe) and similar breakfasts usually run around between 14- 16 euros. I do think a discount is possible if booked in advance. To that end it was a pretty pleasant stay with no major complaints. I could see how this would be convenient for travelers on business or those needing a place to sleep before a train in the morning. If I were in Mainz again and needed access to the Hbf I would probably book again. The price was pretty good. Anyone wanting to be closer to the old town would be better off booking something there.

“Excellent for a night's stop over. ”
Efficient check in, with friendly staff. Evening meal was delicious, not a great deal of choice but suited us. Small rooms but with everything we needed. Bar man / Waiter was very hard working, running two separate areas and the chef was a joy

Restaurant: Breakfast Ok - price debatable Dinner not much variety, long wait (+35 minutes for a cheeseburger and the restaurant was almost empty), service could be better. Just one server Room service: No If you are tight on budget this place works. If you are in town for business for +5 days might want to consider other options with variety of services and customer oriented.
