Just got back from an 8 night stay at the Eden Hotel Wolff. I would recommend it as a great base for exploring Munich and Bavaria. It is across the main train station, so you can travel to other cities easily. The €28 Bayern Pass allows you to travel all day anywhere in Bavaria without reservations, as long as you use regional trains (and not high speed trains). Two blocks away (at Karlsplatz) is the Grey Lines departure point for day trips; I took Premium tour to Neuschwanstein Castle and a day trip to Rothenberg (I would recommend both). You can take the train in from the airport or the Lufthansa shuttle bus lets you off 2 doors down from the hotel. My last day, I walked across the street with my luggage to take the train to my next stop, Heidelberg (which I strongly recommend). The hotel has a long history, is well run and immaculate. It is not a high end luxury hotel, but if you are spending you day sightseeing, do you really need that? The price was right and they even gave me a complementary upgrade. The breakfast buffet is very good, if you get is at a good price (would not recommend the full price of~€26). I had dinner twice at the Central Cafe and it was excellent. The hotel bar area is a friendly spot for a drink or conversation with other travelers. Can't say enough about the service and housekeeping efforts. If you are concerned about being across the train station, I would say that as long as you are not walking about late at night you should have no problems. I felt safe walking back from the main square at Marienplatz in the dark by ~6-7 pm, but I generally don't stay out that late.

The room was small. But other than that, everything was great. The service was very good. The location was perfect (right across the street from the train station) and yet still nice and quiet. What's more, the restaurant was excellent, especially the apple streudel. The next day, when were leaving before breakfast started, they actually seated us early so we could eat and still make the train.

“The Central Cafe at the Eden Hotel Wolff”

The hotel is opposite the main train station and has a distinctive pink façade. (The Central Cafe is just off the hotel bar area and accessible from the street. It is open to non-residents.) The restaurant interior is quite classic - dark wood and wooden floors but well-lit. The tables are well-spaced and there is a separate dining room for private events (the Rembrandt Room). The waiting staff were charming and very helpful ,although there weren't many of them on duty when we visited. (They were working hard but spread thinly). The menu options were pretty good and broke away from the typical choice of pork, pork knuckle or pork :-) There were fish and some solid vegetarian options too. The food was well cooked and well presented and the wine list was fairly comprehensive and not unreasonably priced.
