Localization was perfect! It is near some attractions and just a few meters away from a subway station. The hotel also provides a public transportation card for the guests. Staff were friendly and always willing to share information when requested. Our rooms were comfortable enough. Roof top bar is also a plus, with a different view from the city and a cozy atmosphere. We had just a minor incident with the small freezer in one of the rooms, which was not working. But when informed, the receptionist promptly offered to store our products in their freeze. And breakfast was a bit overpriced, in our opnion. We chose to book a room withou breakfast and ended up esting by a cafe/bakery in the corner, which was good and affordable.

This hotel had all we needed, minus the parking. Our room was clean and quiet, and had all the amenities we needed. Breakfast was very good and had plenty of choices. The hotel offers a wine cellar and a roof top bar, depending on weather. The wine selection was very small, but the cellar is somewhat cozy. The rooftop bar is small and not spectacular, which is ideal for a quiet glass of wine. I should note that Hamburg traditionally had a cold climate, and therefore, no air conditioning is available at this hotel, which nowadays might make the rooms uncomfortably hot in summer. The hotel is ideal for people arriving by train or other public transportation. Auto tourists will park their cars at the nearby fairgrounds (Planten und Bloomen, 15 minutes walk) if they are not lucky to get a spot at the hotel. Baseler Hof prides itself in being a Christian Hotel. The story of a famed concierge who went the whole nine yards for guests and the struggle with the City of Hamburg to get a permit for the rooftop addition, as well as other historical facts, can be followed on printed displays on the walls. A very friendly server at the breakfast room actually asked us what our plans for the day were, which confirmed that Baseler Hof does have a high interest in having good communication with its guests.

Located about 5 mins walk from the UBahn station Stephansplatz, the hotel looks nice as you enter. A large foyer/bar area. Check in was easy; we tried our rudimentary German wherever we went, but the receptionist's English was the best way for us to communicate. Our stay entitled us to a free travel card for public transport, something we hadn't known in advance. We'd bought a family ticket when we landed in Hamburg and should've waited. As it happened, we used ours until it ran out, then got the hotel one for our trip to the station to head to Berlin. Incidentally, the public transport system in Hamburg (and Berlin) seems to operate on a trust method. You buy a ticket, then have to get it stamped/validated at a machine. That then starts the period of use for the ticket (24 hours/4 days etc). If you don't validate the ticket, and nobody checks; you can, in theory, travel for free. There's a €60 fine per person if you travel without a valid ticket. We had two rooms as a family, both on the same bit of corridor. The largest room looked out over the main street, but that didn't mean it was too noisy. It had a double bed and a fold out sofa bed; bath, shower and storage. There was even a small balcony. The smaller room was a double bed, shower and had less room. Both rooms were well appointed, clean and welcoming. There was a fridge/minibar. Some of the items were free (water, tea and coffee) the booze wasn't. We didn't have any meals there or breakfast, so can't comment on that. The bar is nice. When we were there, the barman was excellent. Singing along to opera and other eclectic songs from a playlist. In fact, we saw him in the street the following day, and he was still singing! Overall, a pleasant stay; good location, nice staff.
