There were also some Christmas cookies.

We arrived after check in time, but for some reason, our room was still not ready. It took at least another 30 minutes. When we entered the room, the floors were dirty, and don't get me started on all the dust bunnies under the bed. Felt like apartment living with this place, but the pictures online make it look a lot bigger than it actually is. There was minimal space to put suitcases. Not a lot of counter space in the bathroom. Limited counter space in the kitchen as well. Beds are comfortable, but the mattress toppers move around too much. I tried turning down the thermostat, but it was still quite warm. Kitchen stocked with the standard. We found some dishes that weren't cleaned very well in the cupboard. There was also an insect detector trap in one cupboard. This made me nervous about cockroaches. You are provided 3 dishwasher tablets and a small bottle of dish detergent. The water pressure sucks in the shower. You are pretty much standing underneath the shower head. There is a small drying rack in the bathroom. Housekeeping is only done once a week. There is a small play area, gym, paid laundry facilities (10€ to wash and dry, only 2 machines available) and a dining area that people use to sit and hang around in. Very convenient location wise - 2 laundromats nearby, large grocery store around the corner, numerous restaurants nearby, and 15 min walk to a few Christmas markets. Underground parking available for 27€/day. Lot not secured though; shared public lot, although there is a designated area for Adagio customers. Free toiletries include bulk shampoo/ body wash.

This was a difficult review to write as I still am very unsure. Went away for a Christmas break and for my birthday present from my partner, we came to Cologne for 4 nights to the Adagio Hotel. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a middle-aged man and woman who seemed very friendly, with the man making jokes with us and being very helpful. Once we had checked in we were led to our suite which was on the bottom floor of the building. After travelling for 7 hours from the UK on rail we were ready to lie down before going out to explore, however when we got into the room we saw that there was a few missing items - bowls, coffee pods, chairs, lack of toilet paper. On the listing for the apartment, it claimed there was also a queen bed but upon inspection it was two singles pushed together which isn’t great as I am just over 200cm so was looking forward to a queen! I decided to go to the desk and openly ask if they had any other rooms with a full queen available, as this is what we booked. After I asked, the receptionists morale and attitude towards me clearly switched as if I was inconveniencing him. He turned and looked in a sheet and then simply said no there is no available rooms, and that I would have to ask housekeeping later on into the night? Although upon returning to my room, after around ten minutes, he knocked saying he had found a room with a queen bed. We met him in the reception and then went through the room change. My partner also wanted another pillow as there was only two on the bed, upon asking she got met with another no, and then proceeded to get told “there’s too many English here right now we don’t have many spare things”, not sure if that is a joke or a jab at people staying in the apartments? After returning from the Christmas markets that evening, the spare pillow was on our bed! After that, when entering and exiting the building I made efforts to smile and say hello and he blanked us everytime. And when we left to head home he didn’t say a word to us! This was only the case for the man though as the woman who was on the other shift was constantly welcoming. I’m unsure if it’s a language barrier, culture difference or just very dry humour but it seemed as though we had annoyed him by being there. Although the room downstairs was not satisfactory, it was very accessible being on the bottom floor, with an open shower - no need to climb in and out of bath like rooms on higher floors. We were also warned at check in that if there is to be any fire alarm triggered due to cooking then we would be charged €500?! We was told any burnt food/smoke/steam would set it off! How are we supposed to cook as there is an alarm directly above the stove? So we stayed well away from the kitchen and ate out every night which, ultimately, wasn’t an issue. There also isn’t daily cleaning, being an aparthotel. Cleaning is weekly so if you stay longer than this you can have your room cleaned. I would also recommend bringing an IPad/Laptop with you if you are English as the only tv channels are news channels and can get very boring! The chromecast also doesn’t work at all so don’t waste your time trying to do it! Just a warning too, the windows open all the way and are around waist height for me - quite dangerous especially if you have kids or forget the window is open! The gym is also a rowing machine, an elliptical machine and a bike - no bench and dumbbells go up to 10kg so not great if you want a full workout. More just if you want to get a sweat up. On the last day we also came into contact with what I believe to be a silverfish? I’m unsure as I’ve never seen one before but I took a photo/video which I will attach to this. I understand these aren’t present because it’s dirty and don’t harm people, it’s due to the moisture being high in a room, so didn’t bother me all that much - being the last day! Probably something the hotel should look into… On the other hand, the Adagio is placed in an excellent location for Christmas time, in the centre off all markets we went to, the angel market or the cathedral market were probably the best in my opinion, a great mix of food/drink, ambience and stalls. The best place to eat for us was Cafe Buur, even though a 25 min walk away it was well worth it, some of the best brunch I’ve ever eaten! Other than the confusing receptionist and the kitchen we had an excellent time, I guess it’s just luck with what room you get given on the day, whether the appliances and condiments are restocked and whether the receptionist is in a good mood - I think it’s just best to not plan to use the kitchen! Complimentary tea and coffee is also available in the lobby/breakfast area which was excellent after a cold day out. Can’t comment on the breakfast although I believe it’s only continental for €22pp/pd!! Overall, this hotel was very good. Good location, comfortable bed (in the end!), very clean. There’s just few overshadowing factors which make it an interesting, but not necessarily unpleasant, place to stay - probably more of a three star hotel due to these factors. I would give it three stars for this and I would recommend it for people who want to visit cologne at Christmas or business and don’t mind a bit of inconvenience here and there, but not for people who want to be catered for or want to feel particularly welcome. Attached is the images of the first room we was given, only thing different is the bed! Didn’t get any images of bathroom, but it’s very nice and modern.
