“Excellent room and place to stay”

The room was spacious, modern, clean and exactly as advertised. I had a very pleasant stay here. An ideal location for exploring Berlin on foot, lots of good food places nearby and very close to Checkpoint Charlie, although a bit of a walk to the nearest train station.

Lovely hotel. Friendly staff. Very clean. Great location near to Checkpoint Charlie and within walking distance of Berlin Centre. Short walk to tube station. Stayed for a three day short break in Berlin and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Totally recommend.

Great hotel, excellent location, close to everything. Very clean, great breakfast, only downside is a bar fridge in bed room would be handy but other than that I would definitely stay here again. Tip: Asian restaurant downstairs that’s not affiliated with the hotel has exceptional food

Hotel Gat Point Charlie is conveniently located in Der Mitte of Berlin, at the city’s thoroughly modernized core. The hotel is slick and trendy. The flatness of its contemporary façade is exaggerated by its geometric gray surface perforated by irregularly regular windows – like a giant punch card from an elderly computer. Rooms are minute. Some are 10 to 12 square meters, the size of a Stasi solitary cell (reportedly the hotel was constructed on the site of the headquarters of the notorious secret police). But it is cleverly streamlined in design: no closet, no dresser, no desk; hangers on pegs in the wall. Mattresses and air-conditioning are high functioning. Most windows open onto slender lightwells with a view into the hotel windows opposite. We were lucky enough to have a street view of two sculptures keeping uncomfortable company in Mauerstrasse: Juan Garaizabal’s elegant Bethlehemskirche and Claus Oldenburg’s House Ball – perhaps the worst example of the artist’s entire and otherwise infectious oeuvre. The common spaces of the hotel are as minimalist as its rooms. The culinary offerings of breakfast are generous, but the breakfast room itself seems to have been modeled on a military canteen. Guests find their places on backless stools at one of five long tables. There are no amenities offered – no toothbrushes on sale, no laundry service and no information on where such things might be obtained. The tab at the friendly hotel bar must be paid as you drink; it can’t be charged to your room. The absence of additional room charges allows the hotel to reckon upfront: your entire bill is settled at the beginning of your stay, before you even get your key. As I remember it from the ‘90s, Berlin was artsy, gritty, and graffitied. Now it is sleek and efficient, bureaucratic and commercial. Hotel Gat Point Charlie is an excellent site from which to familiarize yourself the metropolis: the hotel is a small-scale version of the city in which it is found.
