Hotel Garance offers affordable accommodation in a less tourist-infested part of Paris that's worth getting to know, on the edge of the 13th arrondissement. Les Gobelins metro station on Line 7 is a few hundred metres away. Our room was somewhat smaller than those portrayed on the hotel's website and less “swish” than they looked, with some of the wallpaper lifting off. There were also black stains on the ceiling of the bathroom. But the bed was quite comfortable and the room relatively quiet even though it was on the third floor facing the Avenue des Gobelins. The continental breakfast buffet on the first floor had a good selection of cereals, ham, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, croissants, jam and brown or white bread.

“Dated but well located”

The hotel is well located, and the staff is friendly. The ‘family room’ was basically a double with an extra bed squished against one wall. But it wasn’t pricey, so I guess it was ok. And our room was clean (if a bit dated) contrary to some other experiences recorded here.

This hotel is in a decent location to most locations that anybody would visit in France - an hours walk (which is pleasant if it's not raining) or a 20 minute cab. This hotel is in a decent location to most locations that anybody would visit in France - an hours walk (which is pleasant if it's not raining) or a 20 minute cab. Unfortunately we felt a bit let down when we arrived to the hotel, the room was smaller than it looked in pictures and the bathroom did not look as modern as shown in the pictures, in fact it was covered in black bits. I would not recommend breakfast either, for €5 per person you can get better value for money elsewhere. It was just croissants, rolled up pieces of ham and cheese, and yogurts.

In the heart of the Latin Quarter, what a charming location! Just steps away from great street-side restaurants, and great walks in every direction. The lobby is quite small and dark, but mostly clean. The staff was friendly, even offering to hold our luggage when we arrived as our rooms were not yet available. Upon returning, they had brought our luggage into our room, which was a nice gesture. I do understand hotel cleanliness and size are different in Europe, and I am an easily pleased traveler, leaving my American expectations at home. But, with only 22 rooms, the hotel should have been much cleaner. Linens were clean, bathrooms were acceptable, and main walking areas clean, but all carpeted corners were thick with dust. The age of the hotel added to the charm, but simple repairs to vinyl baseboards and wallpaper peeling in areas should have been repaired. Cleaning service only entered once in our six night stay, which is often typical in France. The air conditioning worked well, as did the plentiful supply of hot water. Two large doors opened to a small balcony with a lovely view of the Parisian streets below. Finally, the beds were comfortable and rooms very quiet for good rest.
