“Perfect location as a tourist”

Stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of a Provence trip and before picking up a hire car. Ideal setting as easy to walk to tourist attractions in the vicinity. Friendly and helpful staff, smallish room however had everything we needed. Small balcony with table and chairs with great views across the water. Loads of restaurants nearby and small pattiseries/supermarket/pharmacy round the corner. Road in front of hotel is pedestrianised and quiet in the day however in the evening it can be noisy with musicians etc.

“NICE VIEW BUT NOT GOOD FACILITIES”

Check in was fast efficient and friendly and the lobby area was beautiful. Our room was a Junior suite on the 6th floor. Upon entering the view over the port just blew us away. The room was large with a balcony, with a separate bedroom tucked away and a nice looking bathroom. After the amazement of the view wore off, I found that the main room was much too busy, not too much the decoration style but the amount of things in there. A desk down one wall, then a large tv with high shelving against the same wall too. A lot of books dotted around and hats and decorative cushions on the bed. Very cluttered. The tv kept cutting out too, Netflix and other apps were on the tv but wouldn’t work. The bathroom while looking luxurious didn’t have a shower only a deep filling bath which took an age to fill. with a shower head attached to the taps. Was very difficult to get in and out of too and as I couldn’t have a shower both of my mornings as it took too long for the bath, I spent my two days in Marseille with bad hair not being able to wash and style it easily, it made me feel a bit rubbish and scruffy. This marred my time in Marseille. The furniture on the balcony was old and wobbly and needs replacing. You have to leave your room key behind the desk when you go in and out for security reasons apparently although when you come back it’s often a different receptionist and you just tell them your room number and they give you your key. The keys are all in numbered boxes on a wall behind the desk and you can easily see what keys are there. So really nothing to stop anyone coming in, looking at the wall and just asking for any key that is in sight. Not very secure. All in all, the view made up for all the things I didn’t like apart from the bath/shower situation and I wouldn’t stay here again because of that. Not sure if we were unlucky with our room but I do feel that a proper shower is a necessity these days especially with the price paid.

It’s not often that we stay at a hotel with a current Trip Adviser Traveller’s Choice award and are disappointed. Sadly, in this case, we were. The location is good to base yourself as one can get to the nice restaurant and cafe areas (in the old town especially panier and the old port) and most of the tourist sites. The Basilica is the other side of old port but I have stayed on both sides and this side (La Residence) is definitely the best side to stay. The Vieux Port metro stop is a short walk from the hotel. The view of the port and across to the Basilica is stunning and so lovely to wake up to every day, but the balcony itself was not very inviting - it is narrow with tired furniture and dirty flooring and dirty glass walls to the neighbouring balconies. Annoyingly the balcony door lock had long ago been broken, so a thief from neighbouring rooms could easily access the room. The port is busy and very noisy at night and not especially inviting. The bathroom was extremely tired with a few broken tiles, and a bath/shower that has not seen a proper clean in a very long time. The step over the bath is quite steep so not suitable for someone with mobility challenges. There was an occasional stinky sewerage smell in the hotel. The carpet in the room had big stains on it. The bed was comfortable but the layout of the shelving of the room is slightly insane, as you have to kneel down to use the coffee machine and half kneel to use the safe. The hotel’s statement that “every room in our hotel has been newly renovated” was clearly written many, many years ago! The staff were friendly and helpful and looked good in their varying versions of their navy striped Bretagne style tops.
