“Great find”

The hotel is central to everything, comfortable, very good standard of hygiene, constant hot water and staff are welcoming and helpful. We would stay here again. Highly recommended and value for money.

The hotel is centrally situated, close to many restaurants. The staff were very helpful, the hotel is extremely convenient to stations and bus stops. Only comment, towels not changed in 7 days, however room cleaned well daily and can recommend this hotel for a stay in Lille.

First of all, many hotels in Lille can be quite pricey for what they offer. We were on a girls' six night escape in late August because my best friend's husband had gone bird watching in Borneo, as you do and we thought 'Why not?'. We looked long and hard before we chose the 3* Hôtel Chagnot. We asked for a twin room at the front on one of the lower floors and this worked for us. Our room was reasonably priced with free cancellation but did not include breakfast. If you are arriving by Eurostar this hotel ticks all the boxes for location. You wheel your case along a pedestrian route (bar minor road crossings plus one wider road right in front of the hotel) and in about ten minutes. voilà, you arrive at the entrance tucked between the 3 Brasseurs and the next restaurant. Our room was basic and very small but, when we closed the windows, it was relatively quiet. We also brought earplugs. There are quieter, bigger rooms at the back of the hotel if you prefer. Lille Flandres mainline train station with its metro access, wonderful façade and clock is right opposite. The hotel's address, 24 Place de La Gare, gives the game away. The area is a semi-pedestrian zone but watch out for cars when you least expect them. They are supposed to give way to you. Once installed in your room with an en-suite bathroom, free Wi-Fi and tea and coffee making facilities (paper cups) you can easily get to the two main squares. Just walk along the wide Rue Faidherbe for five minutes. The large Westfield shopping mall is a very short walk away (I could see it from our window) and at the end of it is a huge Carrefour supermarket to cater for all your needs. Hôtel Chagnot. is surrounded by eateries, bars and takeaways on two sides, so don't imagine it will be peaceful. However, I liked to look out of the window each morning and I didn't mind the fascinating hustle and bustle of the daily routine below. Be aware that there is no safe in the room and no air conditioning. We had a fan, which was fine but we could have done with a few more plug sockets. We watched The Adventures of Zoro on the TV in French. We thought there would be plenty of opportunities for breakfast in the surrounding area, but we felt that the hotel offered better. For just over twelve euros per person you can enjoy a self-serve buffet on the seventh floor (check out the small roof terrace with views if the weather permits). Access is via the narrow lift and a short flight of stairs. Help yourself to unlimited coffee, tea, apple juice or orange, croissants, rolls, cheese, cured meats and ham, yoghurt, fresh fruit, cooked items and some rather delicious madeleines. We booked each breakfast the day before, as and when we wanted it . An express breakfast is available too, plus various vending machines in the entrance. Once, we bought fresh orange juice and croissants at the franchise bakery across the road (La Mie Câline, try translating that). However, if you sit down to eat, you'll be watched by some of the well tolerated but hungry beggars that pop up everywhere in Lille. I gave them my breakfast roll. Room cleaning is mainly in the morning. If you are missing coffee sachets etc. by the afternoon, then the hotel front desk has a cupboard full of spares. I can speak French but the reception staff speak very good English and were really helpful. On our last day, we paid a bit extra for a late checkout (well worth it). It gave us more or less a full day for last minute shopping and gifts. We didn't need to rent a hotel locker (but there are various sizes for a few euros). If you want to use the top floor the washroom before you depart, ask at reception for the key. There are also a few chairs in the foyer to sit while you wait. You cannot beat Hôtel Chagnot for convenience, access to the main areas, the tourist office, the metro (opposite), Lille Flandres Station (opposite) plus the ease of walking to and from Eurostar. You will have to weigh up the pros and cons for yourselves.

Expensive for a very small cheaply furnished room-the location is convenient but there are better and only slightly more expensive options on the more picturesque grand place However the reception staff were very friendly and helpful and breakfast on the terrace was good
