We stayed for 5 days in the Conrad. Our room was a superior king, it was excellent. The shower was the best shower I have ever used. The food in all of the restaurants was very tasty and fairly priced. Staff were very friendly and keen to serve. The room service was a bit haphazard. During our stay there were several large groups, but we never felt that we got less good service. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice and a nice room. The Piano player added a nice atmosphere. Overall I would be happy to stay at the Conrad again.

This is a luxurious hotel with two double beds, bathrobes and rainforest shower plus bath. But it’s seen better days. There’s a lid on the fixed table under the TV you can lift and there’s a hairdryer inside with the inside of the lid having a mirror. It looked dirty, but it was just scratched and damaged. We struggled to charge our phones and devices as only a few of the power outlets worked, so we had to take it in turns with the ones that did work. And the ones that did work were in hard to reach places, so there was a lot of crawling around. The staff seem well meaning but I think they’re poorly managed. At one point we were woken up by a phone call with someone speaking in Egyptian and asking for ‘Caroline’ as far as I could tell. When we wanted help, or tried to call reception there was no reply. When we went down to the floor where the restaurants were we got ambushed by several people trying to divert us from the restaurant we wanted to go to and make us go to the ‘Italian restaurant’. A couple of them made us sit down in chairs with menus from all the restaurants before they would let us go to a table. The self-service restaurant is used for breakfast, and there are a lot of good options including lovely soft rolls and a fresh honeycomb. It was very hard to get tea or coffee, it was supposed to be served rather than self service but we had almost finished breakfast and were very thirsty so I went to find someone who seemed to be in charge. He asked one person to get us tea and coffee then they disappeared and eventually someone else came. There’s a small bank branch downstairs with a number of high end shops, and I was able to change some US dollars into Egyptian pounds. The wifi was very difficult, they told us how to log on, and as I have Hilton Honours it should have been easy just by inputting the number, but we had to go down to the reception area to log on, although once we had done it we could use it in the room. On our last night we decided to try the Egyptian restaurant on the upper floor next to the swimming pool and gym, and it was absolutely lovely. The service was good and there was a lively atmosphere. We had a view of the Nile to one side from our room, but with a busy main road outside we couldn’t get to it, and there were a number of nightclubs on moored boats on the river. Our local travel agent advised us not to go out on our own as the area around the hotel is a bit dodgy, so we had to stick to the hotel restaurants and shops and the bank. But we were only here for a couple of nights, and spent half a day seeing the pyramids. The worst thing happened on check out day. We were told that we had to check out at 12 noon, and we were being picked up to transfer to the airport for our flight to Luxor at 12.30. When we came back from breakfast a chambermaid was in the room, the beds had been made and she was cleaning the shower. My daughter had planned to take a shower before we checked out. But the woman didn’t understand when I tried to explain (with mime) that there was no point in her cleaning as we were about to mess it up. But then at 11.40 when we were packing up and checking we had everything there was a knock on the door and a man we had never seen before demanded to know what time we were checking out. I said 12, and he said ‘It’s 12 now’ I said ‘It’s 11.45’ and he glared at me, told me his name and handed me an envelope with his name on saying ‘I did a good job cleaning, didn’t I?’ I had been going to leave a tip, but felt so intimidated by this man that I ended up leaving nothing.
