“Great Location”

Location was central, very close to the night market and train station. However, the property fell short in terms of hygiene and customer service. We had to request fresh amenities to be sent over everyday.

The hotel is right at the crossing of Renmin Road and Ganjiang Road. Arriving by train in Suzhou at the older Suzhou Station, you can get on the subway line 4 and reach Leqiao Station. Going out the station using exit 5, you will arrive at Plaza Hotel very easily. The hotel has rooms facing the main intersection of the old town. It also has rooms facing south away from the intersection. In summer the south-facing rooms are hotter. In winter the south-facing rooms are probably preferable for sun and quiet. I have been a regular at this hotel for more than ten years. This time my room smelled dank. This is rather unusual but the smell goes away quickly after I turned on the air conditioning. The famous Yi Yuan garden is just across the road from this hotel. Wang Shi Yuan is a short walk (25 mins) away.

“ok, but you can get the same quality for much less money”

I mainly chose this hotel for the location, at the intersection of 2 major roads through downtown: Renmin Rd and Ganjiang Rd. I mainly chose this hotel for the location, at the intersection of 2 major roads through downtown: Renmin Rd and Ganjiang Rd. This is an excellent spot, within walking distance of many gardens (Master-of-the-Nets, Panmen Gate, Canglang Pavilion, Humble Administrator's Garden, Pingjiang Street, etc.) and many others in close proximity with a short taxi ride, plus it is less than 2km from the Railway Station. But the actual hotel was not quite worth the money compared to what you can get with other hotels. The rooms are fine and the shower/hot water is quite nice, but the amenities are very basic. Two small bottles of water per night, and no free coffee or tea in the room so bring your own! The walls are very thin and later in the evening I had trouble falling asleep because I could hear the neighbors' TV. The breakfast is included in the price, but of course it is very Chinese with fried rice and noodles, tofu with prickled vegetables, toast and butter, things of this nature. I was happy with the food, but I think many Western travelers wouldn't be overly excited to eat noodles and pumpkin porridge early in the morning. The major bonus was the early check-in - they let us check in at 11:30am - and check-out is at 2pm. They were happy to hold our luggage after we checked out, too. Overall it was fine, but the price was a little much for what was offered.
