Living up to the name of the hotel, the staff were graceful and helpful in their manner. The room was very clean, comfortable and well-appointed. I was on the 21st floor, with good views of the city. Suzhou is known for its bridges crossing water. Hairy crab is a freshwater crustacean and a prized local delicacy, but not one I prized for my tastes.

We recently stayed here on a Sinorama tour. Reviews have been made of the good but whirlwind tours by this company so the hotel stay was just for one night at the end of a long day only to be up at the crack of dawn the next. As such I am unable to comment on location, places of interest or restaurants nearby or even interaction with staff as the company took care of everything for us. That said, it was a lovely room to reach at the end of the day, on the 16th floor on a very clear night . It was very clean and spacious with a king size bed. The bathroom was huge, with a walk in shower. Both bathroom and room were well supplied with shampoos, creams, toothbrushes combs, hair dryer, slippers, robes, kettle, teas, wifi etc. We had no time to check out the pool or exercise facilities. The breakfast buffet offered both Chinese and Western fare for a great choice. My husband went down a little sooner than I did so was nicely settled by the time I came down and pointed out to me where everything was. Some older folk who came down a little later had some difficulty in finding a place and forgetting to pick up cutlery almost had no energy to face the queues to return for them. We invited them to share our table and helped them out with cutlery etc.

Very comfortable room, nicely furnished though with a queen bed rather than the typical king, and with all the features that seem to be standard with this level of accommodation in China – in-room safe, free wifi, bar fridge, bottled water, kettle (tap water is safe to drink if you boil it), tea and coffee, bathrobes and slippers, hairdryer, etc. Our room was on the 13th floor, well above any possible traffic noise, and looked across to a highrise apartment building, with a small park in between. I quite enjoyed watching what was going on in the building. Where I live, people tend to feel that the higher the apartment, the more desirable it is, but in this case it seemed to be the opposite. The ground-level apartments all had two floors and looked opulently furnished, while people in some of the higher apartments were clearly operating on a different budget. Not surprising, I guess, as housing doesn’t come cheap in urban China. We had dinner at the hotel the evening our group arrived. As with all lunches and dinners on the tour (Sinorama), we sat ten to the table and had a selection of meat, fish and vegetable dishes, plus rice and soup, delivered to the lazy Susan. This was not the best meal of the tour, but it was perfectly good. The dining room was on the third or fifth floor, as I recall. Breakfast was served in a room off the lobby. It had all the utilitarian pizzazz of a department store cafeteria, but the food was good and the coffee even better. As with all the hotels we stayed at, breakfast was served buffet style, with a choice of western or Asian foods. The pool was out of service, and judging by TripAdvisor reviews, that’s not a recent issue, but we wouldn’t have had time to use it anyway, so no loss to us.

Pros: The rooms are really nice and if you get one on a high floor, the view is beautiful at night. The beds are comfy and the washrooms are clean. All in all, it was very relaxing and would definitely stay here again if I come back to Suzhou. Cons: The leisure centre is sort of sketchy and old-looking. I went there at 8PM and asked the person at the front for the swimming pool and they told me it was closed, so extending pool hours would be recommended. The person working at the front could also be more professional as he was just smoking while on his phone and not in a uniform. It was also very sketchy because he had a little girl (i'm assuming his daughter) sitting beside him watching him smoke...
