I've been a few times to this hotel. It's great for the value, the buffet is nice, rooms are good, the pool and the gym are also great! The location is nice if you want to be somehow in the center of Shanghai very near to Found 158 area, so will be a good choice if you plan to party around that... more

I've been a few times to this hotel. It's great for the value, the buffet is nice, rooms are good, the pool and the gym are also great! The location is nice if you want to be somehow in the center of Shanghai very near to Found 158 area, so will be a good choice if you plan to party around that haha. At the top of the hotel, there's a 360 restaurant for drinks, food, or afternoon tea! Nice way to finish your trip there.

“Not perfect but amazing value”

Although the building and foyer are stunning, our first impressions were not very good. We arrived quite late and check in seemed to take an absolute age, with the staff staring intently at the screen with furrowed brows for a good 10 minutes, as if someone wanting to stay at their hotel was something they'd never had to deal with before. Eventually we found the room. It was spacious and comfortable but very dated. The shower head was loose and had clearly being spraying water at the ceiling for some time, as all the paint was peeling off into the bath. The mini-bar had a menu, but no contents. Which was OK as it didn't work anyway. Neither did the hairdryer. And everything shut well before 10.00pm so we couldn't even get a drink. No matter, there are lots of inviting little bars across the street and a shop just down the road. Breakfast was underwhelming. Loads of stuff on offer but I found very little of it appetising. The Chinese dishes were all pretty bland and vegetable based, the fried rice bowl was always empty for some reason, the western food was American-style bacon (ugh) and those horrible over-processed chicken sausages that always look raw, and the juices were not real fruit juice. Again, no matter, there was plenty of egg and bread and there were stations with people cooking stuff so you could probably get something better if you spoke Mandarin. And at least these was proper coffee. And milk. Day 2 was better. We reported the problems in the room and they were fixed straight away. They even repainted the bathroom ceiling. That evening we ate in the revolving restaurant, which was stunning and well worth the brief moment of panic when I couldn't find the toilets because they'd moved. Extensive menu and both food and service were excellent, except... I get the local custom is bringing dishes out one by one, but we were sat with a bowl of barbecue pork belly and nothing else of a good 15 minutes, which was odd. Maybe they could make sure the rice comes out at the same time, even just for us westerners? Seemed like good value though. Day 3 and checkout was easy. I'd grown to like the place by then. And at the end of the day for the price, by western standards, it was pretty amazing value.

Shanghai of 2023 is not the Shanghai of 1983, there are many many many hotels and many are being operated and managed by International Groups and are up to International standards. Jin Jiang Group is part of Shanghai Government and hence state owned. It manages many hotels in Shanghai and elsewhere in China and is a major business group of the Shanghai government. The characters are different and for customers it depends on many factors how you assess the hotel. In general it is not too bad but not excellent. This is a giant hotel in great location from years ago but well maintained and a flagship of Jin Jiang Hotel Group. I had paid extra for the executive floor and lounge. The lounge and lounge food is nothing to speak off and is far from satisfactory compared to those of Marriott Group in this town. The Executive Floor Rooms are nicely kept but room's a bit aged and a bit worn and of course TV has no international channels due to censorship.

Convenient location to large shopping district with walking-distance access to cafes, bars and restaurants. A metro station is literally across the street. The hotel can be quite inconvenient if arriving by car as surrounding roads are narrow and can become quite congested at peak times. Room was of good size for Shanghai, with bed, desk, sofa, coffee table, and bar. Hot water and heating was minimal: there’s no danger of burning yourself or having to open the window to cool down. Internet speed was slow and made streaming video frustrating. Breakfast was rather poor quality and selection for a price of 190rmb. You can get better for less in some of the nearby restaurants. No issues with service, though apart from check-in there was no need to speak to staff. Overall, a rather unremarkable experience. If returning to this area, I would try another hotel.
