I am updating my review to add photos . I have stayed at The Grand Hyatt Shanghai in 2005 and up until 2019 right before Covid-19. This was the The top notch location for many years and The Gold standard. I’ve had great memories of this place. I have been staying extensively with Hyatt because their Asia portfolio far outweighs Marriott (where I have Platinum status and not going to meet the threshold for Marriott status) since Hyatts in Asia-Pacific are wayyy better. I want to address some of the previous reviewers that had me nervous prior to my stay. Yes this hotel is older than others but some were harsh. This hotel opened as a Solid Top of the line product in 1999/2000. Every business person I know of that went to Shanghai that this was their outright preferred hotel. Not going to deny that the hotel has some wear and tear but not enough for me not to enjoy it. The fitness center had equipment from the 2000s but still had a great time in the gym and fitness center . If you want true 5-stars and modern then I recommend The Park Hyatt (across the street) , The Ritz Carlton Pudong or The Peninsula by The Bund. I rate this property 4.6 (yes was a solid 5 for many years). The difference for those properties wasn’t worth it. This is an iconic hotel they made a film with Tim Robbins here “Code 46” 2003. This hotel in North America or Europe or Japan would easily be $600/night . I was grateful for my great time at this hotel and it is a great value for what you pay for. I really enjoyed my visit just as much as I did in 2005 and 2019. I still loved the same beautiful view of Pudong and the river. Some of the staff struggled with English I won’t deny that. Keep in mind this is Post-Covid era which is challenging for the hospitality industry worldwide and this is in the most populated country in the world so keep that in mind and just opened up to international travel within the last year . Staff at The Park Hyatt and Hyatt Regency Tokyo struggled with English too just an FYI to the other reviewers . Fred the manager spoke perfect English and was very nice and professional. I appreciated his assistance.The Concierge staff on the ground level were very helpful. From the previous reviewers I didn’t see the complaints about The Grand Club. I thought The Grand Club was great and had a lot of room and not over crowded at all. The omelette chef and the Grand Club staff were very attentive . This property definitely upholds The Hyatt standards and I really enjoyed my visit .

We last stayed here for both work and pleasure more than 10 years ago, and wanted to try this hotel again as it was nearer to Pudong airport for our flight. It is still in a great location, with easy connectivity to the Lujiazhui metro station and the IFC mall, with myriad food and shopping options, including a City Super supermarket. Our room on the 71st floor had great views of the Shanghai Pearl Tower and part of the Bund, even with overcast skies. The room itself was large, with a huge bathroom with a bathtub, as well comfortable bed, and a safety deposit box. It was slightly dated, as was the hotel, and some of the furnishings did look slightly worse for wear. The concierge staff on the ground floor were great as usual, but staff at other levels were not as good. The check in process could be smoother, and there needs to be someone controlling the queue, as many guests tried to cut in line even when the queue was signposted. Also, the serving crew at the breakfast area were dragging chairs around when cleaning up after guests, or took their time clearing clearly finished plates. That is not the standard of a Hyatt, especially one with such prestige. Breakfast items were also just okay, and nothing to write about much, other than the juices where were good. The pastries especially, other than the croissants, were disappointing. You need to take two separate lifts from the ground floor to the lobby, and then onwards to your room, but the lifts were fast and efficient and we seldom had to wait more than a couple of minutes. Wifi was fast and worked well, with the usual Great Wall blockage of western apps like FB and Google, even using a VPN. Do specify gate 3 when ordering a car or taxi, as sometimes the vehicle drops you at gate on the other side, which is the office building.

We stayed at 1King Bedroom Lounge Access executive level room at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai. I have been there a few times before and had very good experiences. This time it was completely different. The rooms where still very good, but there where staff shortages. The staff gave their best but I can only assume they are not trained enough by management. Eg. on check in I I asked the staff to check in in the Club Level the answer was no, the answer was, check in at the main desk. On the same evening we went to the lounge. The offerings where basic and the service was basic.. My wife wanted to order a Chinese Soup, but was not understood. Thanks to an English speaking fellow Chinese guest the issue was resolved. The canopies offerings and drinks where limited, similar to much cheaper hotels in the same category. to underline the lack of training, corked bottles where put onto the buffet Also it was a surprise to us that there was a new policy at this Hyatt hotel, when you book a club room you have to have breakfast at the lounge or you will have to pay extra. We have tried to speak to the manager, the answer was he is too busy. We checked out!
