I read not so great reviews of Cumbres but as I googled and this is best hotel I can find as the super best cost ~USD 2K a night, next is Cumbres which is ~USD 400 a night. Since we need 9-11 nights here I’ve to settle for Cumbres. Was pleasantly surprised checking in, the front desk San Diego? is extremely pleasant and welcoming. He gave us a room right to the end (~500m from reception) but it was a lovely room with huge outdoor space. Even have an outdoor area for you to shower. As this place is so dry and sunny, is hard to enjoy the large outdoor space which we have. Room has a fridge which is complementary so you can buy some wine or yoghurt and chill it. Swimming pool is a dismal as it is filthy, small and super cold. Gym is not great, place is rather filthy, they have one treadmill which is the silly sliding kind and it only opens late. Breakfast has limiting food but is enough since you can order an omelette to your liking. The breakfast box is pretty good! We have many days of activities that need to leave hotel by 5-6am, their breakfast box is great! Their dinner only starts at 7pm, but you can sweet talk or negotiate with them via whatsapp if they can help to push earlier for you. Location is not great as is about 15-20min. walk to city centre under the HOT SUN. They provide shuttle bus but only starts at 1:30pm. You can order a taxi which cost 5,000 peso but is hard to come back as no taxi will stop for you once you’re out. Is best to walk back. Not many staff speaks english but they are all very helpful. We enjoyed our stay here and happy to be back again.

The staff are incredibly kind and friendly. The guides are awesome. This hotel gets a serious mark down based on the food. The staff are incredibly kind and friendly. The guides are awesome. This hotel gets a serious mark down based on the food. Firstly, it helps if you speak Spanish, as items are incorrectly translated if you rely on English. As a Spanish speaker I avoided getting. Nasty surprise. Eel was translated into Salmon, and fillet steak into ribs, which tasted of pork. Secondly, the quality of the food was not great. They had a BBQ, where the meat was loaded and fists full of sal thrown. Result, overcooked and salty food, and what is sad is the cuts of meat were not on the cheap side. It got to the point I could lot trust the chefs especially if they had something such a Ceviche on the menu. Point to note, the lunch and supper menu are the same. I would stay again, but would eat in San Pedro de Atacama.

“Solid place to stay, some downsides”

We stayed for a weekend and generally enjoyed our time. Pros: the staff are amazing and friendly, the food was really good (especially bbq night), the outdoor showers, sizeable bathrooms, the shaded back "deck" with views out to nature, sunscreen in the common areas, and the aesthetic of the rooms were all top notch. Cons: when they water the plants (especially at night) there is definitely an unpleasant smell from the water they use (ie it smells like sewage) so if you're sitting outside in the evenings or early mornings watch out for this, and the pool surfaces need refinishing (they are peeling). Neutral: it's a little bit away from the main historic town, but in our case that was fine, and in general made it easier to skip the narrow town streets when heading out to see the sights.
