This hotel offers a lot of pluses. Location is outstanding. Prices are reasonable. On premise limited parking is available for $15 per day. Service is excellent. Breakfast is offered onsite for a price. The wine machine is an asset as is the Saeco espresso/coffee drinks machine. This is our second stay at this hotel and we will return.

“A Hotel in Search of an Identity”

Hotel Champlain is well located in upper town Quebec City, near the Christmas markets. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. Hotel Champlain is well located in upper town Quebec City, near the Christmas markets. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast was adequate, but evidently once the spinach quiche is gone, it's gone. Out of four breakfasts, I never saw more than bits of crust. Our room was a suite with a kitchenette. It is just as pictured on the website, with a decent king sized bed just off the sitting area. Unfortunately there is no divider or curtain to block light. Speaking of light, the room had the worst lighting I've encountered in a hotel. One dull standing lamp to read by, and none over the desk. I literally read using my hiking trail light. There is no clothes storage; i.e., dresser, shelves, etc., so you're living out of your suitcase, even though there is room to include both items. I would suggest heavy duty hooks inside the door to hold coats, as the hanging closet space is small. The couch and loveseat are ready for replacement, and there are no cushions for back support. The bathroom is the most modern area but has an out of place sink with fish design, that looks like it wants to be Asian, and the strangest faucet I've ever seen. The shower was clean but the tiles need cleaning. The heating system worked well and we were always warm even with snow outside. The hotel could be so charming, with a good refresh of the rooms, including new furniture, lighting and carpet. I would suggest embracing its Old Quebec history, including old world bathroom furnishings instead of the odd fish bowl. All in all, as has been stated by others, the Hotel Champlain is not the best and not the worst I've seen. I would, however, have difficulty recommending it unless it's updated.

We stayed at this hotel several years ago and were excited to return. However, we were disappointed with our experience this time. To be fair the staff were excellent, checkin and checkout went smoothly, the breakfast buffet offerings were plentiful and tasty and the hotel location was ideal. On the downside our room felt tired, in need of an update. The TV, shower, bed and bedding were fine but the carpet was stained and smelled, the baseboards in the bathroom were failing and the deadbolt on the entrance door wasn’t working. The room was heated and cooled by a unit below the window. It worked well but it was not possible to close the curtains and run the unit at the same time.
