Gurko Hotel

“Hotel Gurko - highly recommended”

Hotel Gurko is a beautiful place to stay. It has clean, spacious rooms with breathtaking views from the bedroom balcony. The breakfast is high quality and generous in quantity. The evening meals are equally tasty. The staff are helpful and polite. I would recommend Hotel Gurko.

“Great location, lovely staff, big rooms with balcony and enormous circular bath”

This was the nicest hotel we stayed in in Bulgaria. Fantastic location with views from our balcony down the valley. Lovely staff and excellent breakfast. Enormous circular bath! Only downside is the road outside is very narrow, and someone clipped our car overnight and didn’t stop.

Not very crowded (in November), very quiet during the night time. Nice sunset! Good restaurant, set in a taverna style, with traditional meat recipes, and good wine selection list. Not very crowded (in November), very quiet during the night time. Nice sunset! Good restaurant, set in a taverna style, with traditional meat recipes, and good wine selection list. The service is reasonable good and the personal is friendly and helpful. Car travelers should note that parking places are very limited, and might not be enough for all cars! The alternative is to park the car on the adjacent streets, hoping that you did not park on other residents spots. During the evening, the streets are fully loaded with the bulgarian residents cars, so finding a reasonable spot could be a tricky adventure. If you wish to secure a parking slot in the front of the hotel (which is placed into a narrow old style cobblestone street) you need to arrive around noon time, otherwise you could ruin your stay!

I’ve really struggled to write this review. So many ups and downs. The hotel is on the most beautiful street in Veliko Tarnovo. It’s a residential street and beautiful to walk down at night, but if you’re expecting restaurants and shops you’ll need to walk a couple of minutes uphill to the Main Street, which isn’t a great problem. The staff are kind and helpful and breakfast great. The highlight of the hotel is the restaurant. I was here in September and the weather mild. I ate outside in the evening and the food, service and views were brilliant. My room wasn’t so good. Old and worn, but when I looked into other rooms they looked better. Up three flights of stairs to room number 6, but at reception there was an elevator to what I think were better rooms. I’ve read other reviews, especially on room 6, and would echo their thoughts - the shower over the bath sprays over the floor. If you’re older you need to be careful stepping out of the bath so as not to slip. There is a rail to hold, but it’s almost broken and if you applied pressure I think it would break. This seems to be the case no matter which room you’re in. The hot water is VERY hot. So hot that you need to be careful not to burn yourself. The bed was uncomfortable and the bed covers and sheets not good. Luckily the weather was warm and didn’t need a lot of cover. The bottom sheet wasn’t fitted and kept moving during the night. Laundry was free for 3 nights or more according to the book in the room. I stayed for 4 nights and when I gave laundry it came back wet and had a hang it in the room overnight to dry. Maybe not their fault because I think they outsource the laundry. Didn’t mind so much considering it was free, but when I checked out I was charged for it. Didn’t mind paying because there was a bit of laundry, but it came back damp and they weren’t true to their word. Also, wifi never worked the whole time I was there. Not sure if there are better options in Veliko Tarnovo, but as far as value for money may be better options (restaurant and service hard to beat though)
