I cannot think of a better location for a hotel in Vienna for a tourist. Taxis can drop you at the door, right where the pedestrian streets start. In the heart of the old city, walking distance to a myriad of good restaurants, stores and tourist attractions. The historical building is dated? Not so much. Everything works, modern toilets, decent lift and good, kind service. Yes, the lift is slow, the rooms must be locked from outside too, and it does not have a gym. But...who cares? I'm ready to come back here.

There are plenty of positive things to say about the charming and historic Graben Hotel, starting with the very warm welcome we received from Suliman at Reception. We arrived with our car on a busy Saturday evening, and he went out of his way to make the check-in easy for us. The car parking is a little tricky (it’s in the heart of old Vienna, after all) but Suliman explained carefully where we needed to go, the procedure for the parking tickets and tended to our bags for us. We returned to find our bags waiting in the room. Of note, there is a glass-sided elevator at the hotel which fits nicely with the Art Nouveau décor. Suliman gave us several recommendations for restaurants, and we settled on the Italian restaurant at the hotel. He kindly made a reservation for us, and we had a lovely meal, with very convenient proximity to our room! That said, we enjoyed an after dinner walk through the historic district. The hotel is discreetly tucked off a side street at Stephansplatz and the vibrant area all around the magnificent church. It is a few minutes’ stroll from the Hofberg Palace and the Spanish Riding School, a few more minutes to the Opera house and has easy access to the tram lines. Our room was not large, but it was amazingly quiet, a real oasis from the frenetic activity of the weekend streets in old Vienna. (Suliman had offered us a different room -- with a street view -- but cautioned that it would not be as peaceful given that it faced the busy street below). The bathroom was very clean, and we had good shower pressure with very warm water. Towels and amenities were very satisfactory. The mattress was firmer than I like but my husband thought it was ideal. The pillows and comforter were very comfortable; we both slept soundly. The breakfast buffet offered a good spread with eggs to order. We stored our luggage for the day after we checked out, so we were able to wander freely. In all, it was a delightful, short break to Vienna. Most definitely, we will stay again at the Graben Hotel on our return, for a longer stay this time!

“Lovely gem of a hotel”

Wonderful, welcoming hotel. Location wise the hotel is perfect, few minutes walk from Stephanplatz and a few minutes walk to the Spanish riding school of Vienna. Our room was spacious and clean. Wonderful, welcoming hotel. Location wise the hotel is perfect, few minutes walk from Stephanplatz and a few minutes walk to the Spanish riding school of Vienna. Our room was spacious and clean. Bed's were comfortable and a great night sleep was had by all. Breakfast had a great variety, all fresh and well presented. The staff were friendly, especially in the restaurant at breakfast. Helmut really made our trip extra special.

“Good location but loud room”

Pros: Location is great. In city center with lots of restaurants, metro stops, supermarket close. Adjacent to main walking street. The Italian restaurant next to it served great food. Cons: Hotel is extremely outdated. Only one elevator for 7 floors so expect to wait. The room key is a … more

Pros: Location is great. In city center with lots of restaurants, metro stops, supermarket close. Adjacent to main walking street. The Italian restaurant next to it served great food. Cons: Hotel is extremely outdated. Only one elevator for 7 floors so expect to wait. The room key is a key with a plastic strip attached to it, so you have to carry that or turn into front desk and hope they aren’t dealing with customers when you retrieve it. The worst is how loud the room was. All the cabinets creak loudly when opening. The beds make loud creaking sounds every time you move so you won’t sleep well unless your partner doesn’t move all night. Also the wood floors creak loudly when you walk. Also, there’s not even a basic gym at the hotel.
