I must admit I expected a little more in a 5* hotel. We generally stop in 4* when on holiday. I was really looking forward to staying in "the Savoy", Melbourne, but I was a little disappointed in the size of the twin bedded room (ie no couch to sit comfortably) and small compared to other 4* hotel rooms we have had the pleasure to experience. There was no greeting or help at the door with cases (as shown in the programme the London Savoy was featured in). I am disabled and needed to rest a lot - the quality of the TV programmes provided was poor. We had Netflix provided at 3* motels we had stayed in - and expected as much or more from The Savoy. They sell the stay at the Savoy as an "experience" - but it was no better than 4* hotels we had stayed in.

The Savoy…those words have luxury written all over them if you’re familiar with the like-named hotel in London, UK. This place was a bit of a disappointment to us and our travelling friends. It all started upon check-in when we asked whether breakfast was included with our room rate. It wasn't…but they could include it for $30 per person per day more. Grrr. Seems a bit steep, but okay, it’s easier than trying to find a breakfast place each morning. So imagine our surprise when we get down to breakfast next morning and find that there’s a breakfast buffet, but if you want an omelette prepared, it’ll be $10 more! Umm…no bloody way! You can take that bit of misleading BS and shove it! The scrambled eggs were pretty deplorable, so all in all that was a burn. Room size was not bad, but the bathrooms are small. I would much have preferred to give up a bit of room space to have a bathroom that could be used by 2 people. The sink was ridiculously small…see the picture included. The vanity countertop in the bathroom had very little space for anything other than my shave kit and her makeup kit. After that, there wasn’t even room for me to put my glasses down while I showered. Room servicing was slow. We left our room at 9:30 AM today, came back at 3PM and the room still had not been serviced. Ditto for the couple we’re travelling with. Laundry was very expensive. For 3 t-shirts, 2 polo (golf) shirts, 5 pairs of underwear and 5 pairs of socks, the charge was $161 AUD. Ridiculous. I can’t recommend this place, even though it was quiet and handy to touring and shopping. I suspect there are better options nearby.
