“Charming old world but no longer 5 star”

This hotel was suggested & booked for us by our travel agent. We stayed for 4 nights & I've no idea what the price was. On the positive: Our room was large. It would probably be categorised as a suite in other hotels. We had a bath which was a treat for me as so many hotels only have showers. The bed, pillows, duvet & bedding were extremely comfortable. We slept very well.  The hotel is in a good location. The TV (although small for the size of the room) had a good range of channels. We were away from any building noise that other reviewers have mentioned and although we could hear the trams from our room on the first floor that wasn't an issue for us. However, the things we struggled with included the following.. 1. Need for refurb: clearly the hotel needs a refurbishment and we fully acknowledge that the cost & planning issues will be problematic. However, simple things like replacing or covering the dreadfully stained chairs in the dining room would be an immediate improvement. 2. Hotel is categorised as 5 star but it shows that it is being run on a very tight budget. For example no complimentary bottles of water in the room. No bath or shower gel or vanity kits provided. With regard to breakfast we found it very stingy. With the included bed & breakfast rate you are allowed EITHER one 'small' item OR one 'large' item from the breakfast menu. If you choose, as I did, to have some fruit & yoghurt (an item on the small menu), that is your full breakfast 'entitlement'. If you want, for example, a piece of toast as well, that'll be charged as an additional breakfast cost. We hadn't encountered such a rigid breakfast menu in the rest of Australia. The hotel has no facilities like pool/gym/health or beauty but perhaps they could consider offering guests access to something in a nearby property. Overall, the hotel was fine. It is of it's time & is charming but it desperately needs a cash injection if it can remain classified as 5 star.

Nice hotel good location close to princess theater and little bourke st.restaurants , old world charm , would benefit with a good clean especially around the lifts etc. room was alright but there was a draw draw missing and there was no toilet brush and when I requested one they offered to clean the toilet but no brush was given , there was a fair amount of damage around the basin in bathroom , also breakfast at $100 for two is a bit steep , it took me 2 days to work out the remote of the tv , over all we will probably stay there again for the location but better value available in town for sure.
