“Ridiculously Loyal to Hyatt Special Occasion, PHM Feel Short - Very Short”

I've stayed at the PHM 5x and have always spoken highly of the hotel - until now. This time was just for 1 night in a king deluxe for my partner's birthday. Before I get to why I wrote that: The hotel and general professionalism by check-in staff, though somehow perplexed when mentioning the occasion, was good/great. The decor is relatively understated, the decor of each room type I've reserved in previous stays is very nice, especially with the aqua marine sink basins, shower door and white marble. Julette balconies and features such as fireplaces add to room character. The comfort of the mattress this time was absolutely horrible and the thermostat would only go down to 19C. Chromecast and the Bose speaker system were good features. The pool and hot tub were nice, save the shrill children (can't be helped - all good). The breakfast buffett was in-line with other 5* hotels. The spa treatment and high tea were great. Now, what really got to me on this stay: I don't mean to sound like I expect the world to be handed to me, and I apologise to anyone who reads this thinks that; but we are both Globalists and Platinum Cardholders. This reservation was made personally by our executive planner from AX Plat FHR & sured up by the Globalist concierge. I was absolutely gobsmacked, given all that we had thrown in towards this birthday trip, that we weren't upgraded to a Park or Terrace Suite. Furthermore, as is expected with 5* hotels and special occasions, if the room is ready for you (it was) birthday cake and bubbly will be in the by the time you walk in. A woman walked in 4 hours after check-in with a cart w a slice of cake and a bottle of water. All this is to say, in comparison to other 5* hotels, one of the best and unexpected experiences at a 5* hotel in Sydney (booked the exact same way) was an unexpected upgrade to the Presidential Suite, where Prince Harry stayed the next week, with a whole cake and nice champagne waiting for us. This was booked at roughly the same room rate. Another 5* hotel in Switzerland (no special occasion), where we had stayed in the summer a year before - I inadvertently passed the front desk manager, who remembered me by name(!) even sent up champagne and sweets. These reservations aren't made at out-of-this-world rates: by loyalty, and we are ridiculously loyal to Hyatt. I expected a bit more discretion with an upgrade (hotels are rarely booked to capacity and this is off-peak season), and the "special occasion" extras just flat out fell short. If this experience is a reflection of what you would expect during a regular stay, this isn't a true 5* hotel. No wonder Hyatt categorises this a 5 instead a 7 or 8, like every other PH, except the cat 4 PH, Canberra. We're either staying at the Ritz or the Langham next time.
