“Gem of a hotel in prime Melbourne location”

I can't say enough positive things about my extended stay at this property. Every member of the staff made me feel special, rooms were clean and comfortable and amenities were top notch. The lounge has amazing views and The Collins restaurant surprised this Texan with solid BBQ.

“Truly 5 star hotel”

A lovely hotel conveniently located near the yarra river and lots of great restaurants. The first hotel where we actually loved the pillows - usually they are too hard/too soft or too big. Views of the river were fantastic. Will definitely come again.

From valet parking, bell desk, checking in, room service, grand club lounge, pool, massages at city club. All the staff were amazing and gave my friends and I excellent service. “Beautiful room and excellent location marred by ageism in lounge”

I was initially very happy with my stay. As a World of Hyatt Explorist, I was upgraded to a king bed deluxe room, which was wonderful especially considering that it was my honeymoon. The room was fantastic with a wonderful view and everything in good order. The hotel itself is in an excellent location, with multiple restaurants and bars within walking distance, which was perfect for foodies such as ourselves. However, our lounge experience left a lot to be desired. We visited the lounge 4 days in a row. I quickly began to notice that lounge staff would greet patrons who were Caucasian and middle aged and visiting the lounge for the first time; staff would explain the hours of breakfast and canape hour and offered to make coffee and bring it to the table. Thinking that I was thinking too much of it, I paid close attention on my third and fourth day. Unfortunately this was a continued pattern, with patrons such as my husband and myself (younger and Asian) not being greeted and sometimes even ignored. Caucasian patrons who were not abiding the dress code (e.g. wearing sandals and shorts) were treated better than we were. What was the cherry on top was on our last day, one of the staff members asked my husband and I for our room number despite us visiting the lounge for 4 days in a row. I understand that verification can be done to make sure we have proper lounge access, however, the staff member who checked our room number saw us in the lounge the day prior and NO OTHER patron was checked for this information. I am dismayed that we were made to feel like we did not belong in the lounge, that there was no way that a non-Caucasian, non-middle aged person could possibly have access to the lounge. This was blatant ageism and favoritism. We stayed at the Four Seasons Sydney prior to and Park Hyatt Auckland after our stay here; we received exceptional service, multiple staff members at each of these hotels greeted us by name, and above all, we felt like valued guests. Unfortunately, I now see that there are one-star reviews dating back from 2016 that show that my experience was not a one-off. The Grand Hyatt Melbourne does not embody Hyatt's DE&I statement: "We believe embedding DE&I in every part of our business is the manifestation of our purpose. That is why we are committed to ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion is reflected across our actions and behaviors..." As a World of Hyatt member (and anticipated Globalist at the end of the year), I am dismayed that this was the experience we had. Until this culture of ageism/favoritism changes, I will not be staying here again.
