Caniçal

In the land of Moby Dick

Did you know that until 1981 Caniçal was the last whaling port in southern Europe? Located to the east of the island, this characterful Portuguese village will blow you away with its quirky fishing atmosphere brimming with history and legends. With a rich religious tradition and the oldest parish on the island, this village proudly showcases its past as a former whaling centre at its fascinating Whale Museum, where you can find out about the key role that this gigantic mammal had in the island's history and economy in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and learn about the subsequent reconversion of this industry in the area. In fact, whales were so important that scenes from the film Moby Dick (John Houston, 1956) were filmed here, with Gregory Peck at the helm.

Today the ever-welcoming Caniçal is one of Portugal's main tuna-fishing ports and the perfect place to savour mouth-watering fish dishes. Lying at the foot of the hill crowned by the Hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Piedade is the discreet Prainha beach. A black sandy beach of volcanic origin, it's great for unwinding in a unique setting. If you're there in September, don't miss the annual festival dedicated to fishermen that fills the village streets with passion, colour and tradition.
