Machico

Waterfront gem

Of great historical importance, the second-most populated city on the island was actually the first capital of Madeira between 1440 and 1496, under the command of Tristão Vaz Teixeira. Today Machico seduces visitors with long days of relaxation and entertainment, terraces and restaurants for all tastes, a fantastic coastal strip of fine sand, and historic streets and buildings, such as the religious temple Capela dos Milagros and the forts of São João Baptista and Nossa Senhora do Amparo.

For the more adventurous keen to discover the offshore charms of Machico, there's nothing better than setting off on a boat trip or exploring its wonderful marine reserve, hugely popular among divers from all across Europe.

If you want to admire truly impressive views, head up to the Pico do Facho, a famous viewpoint crowned by a former lighthouse, which used to warn villagers about the arrival of pirates. Have a great trip.
