La Valleta

City of knights

If Malta is a summary of the Mediterranean, La Valleta, its capital city, is the island's essence. The city of Knights, as it is commonly known, is a fortified city made of golden stone that has a high concentration of monumental heritage. Famous films such as Troy and Gladiator were shot in these streets.

Everything in this small city recalls the past. The St John Knights founded La Valletta after resisiting the Ottoman attack in 1564, honouring the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Vallette and naming the city after him.

Walking around the stone-paved streets is an experience filled with contrasts and a mix of cultures. In only a few metres you can find a British telephone booth next to a typical Mediterranean style building. The centre is crossed by Triq Ir-Repubblike, the main avenue, presided by the St. John Cathedral, with a humble exterior in contrast with the sumptuous interior. You will also find numerous palaces such as the Great Masters Palace, home to the Maltese Parlament, Rocca Piccola House and Auberges of the Langues.

We highly recommend tastes the Mqarat date pastries. If you wish to indulge in the past visit the Museum of Archaeology and the Arts. Mix in with the locals at the Monti Market and end your day watching the sunset in the Upper Barakka Gardens with an incrdible view of the Grand Harbour, the bay with the Three Cities in the background. This small gem makes any plan the best.
