Ciutadella

Medieval charm

A historical town of spectacular beauty, its port blends perfectly into the old town centre, being one of the most photographed spots in Menorca. Access by boat through the narrow port will give you a unique perspective of the city with a line of balconies that embroider its shore, offering a sublime sunset view. Situated at the west end of the island, the origins of the former capital of the island until 1722, date back to the Roman domination. You may discover the history of this town strolling along its narrow medieval streets, with a stop at the essential sites such as the Cathedral, Roser church, San Nicolás castle, “la Torretrencada”, the municipal Museum Bastió de Sa Font, Museu Diocesà de Menorca and Born square, where you will find an obelisk, in memory of the cruel Turkish pillaging suffered in 1558.

Ciutadella was for ages the refuge of the Menorcan aristocracy. Here you will find the most rooted traditions of the island, which have been passed down for many generations. For many years tourists have travelled to this island to enjoy one of its summer highlights, the great feast of Sant Joan, a tradition that goes back to the Medieval Age. In June, this quiet and beautiful town is interrupted by the jumping horses, the neighbours and visitors’ enjoyment, gin and pomada that flow down the streets. Ciutadella is without doubt a beautiful, sea front town.
