research area of NASA itself
Get ready to discover a place whose history dates back at least to Roman times and where the Spanish Centre for Astrobiology and NASA itself conduct their research for the MARTE project. Discover the source of the famous Rio Tinto, which owes its name to the exaggeratedly red colour of its waters, and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience by yourself, with your partner or as a family. Take a guided tour at the Museo Minero de Riotinto that will transport you to Peña de Hierro, one of the most stunning and jaw-dropping spots of this mining area with outstanding views, and the Corta Atalaya, where you can enter an authentic mine shaft. You have to make the journey by train, the great symbol of the Industrial Revolution that was the flagship of the mining company and triggered the economic and social development of the whole region, connecting the mines with the port of Huelva. The Rio Tinto Foundation has recovered 12 km of the old commercial railway, covered by restored locomotives and wagons from the former mining company that will take you to its incredible landscapes along the course of the impressive Rio Tinto.
