Ny-Ålesund is situated halfway in the fjord of Kongsfjorden, on its south side and has been the starting point of several historical attempts to reach the North Pole. Ny-Ålesund is one of the four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago. Today, it is inhabited by approximately 35 people that work for one of the research stations or the logistics and supply company. In summer the activity is increased with up to 150 researchers and technicians. A number of countries maintain research stations at Ny-Ålesund. There is one shop and a tiny museum that exhibits the history from the first establishment of the coal mining up to today’s international research community. Today, 20 000 tourists travelling by cruise ship visit Ny-Ålesund every year.
