Qeqertarsuaq means 'Big Island' and is one of only two townships in Greenland that do not occupy a part of the main island of Greenland (the other is Aasiaat). It consists of the island of Qeqertarsuatsiaq and its satellite islands with a total area of 9,700 km2. Many of the flat basalt mountains that are found all over the island are covered with perpetual snow. The glacier covers almost 10 km. As something quite unique in Greenland, it is possible to ride in sleigh in Qeqertarsuaq under the Midnight Sun of summer. Hunting and fishing are still the main occupations of the inhabitants of the island. About 1,000 of these inhabitants live in the main village and more than 50 in the settlement of Kangerluk, a few hours by boat to the north-west. That's where the researchers found a 'galloping' glacier in 1999 that moves up to 100 meters a day. Traces of settlements of between 5,000 and 6,000 years have been found in Qeqertarsuaq. In 1773, the settlement of Godhavn (the Good Harbor) was established
