It is the capital od the region of Lagos, at the northern end of the Reloncaví Sound in the Llanquihue Province. Puerto Montt was founded in 1853 by Vicente Perez Rosales. One year before the german immigrants had arrived to the city with Valdivia and Osorno. From the bay of Puerto Montt you can view the Corcovado and the volcanoes of Michinmahuida. Small-scale ecotourism, however, is encouraged, and the island, which is roadless and off-limits to cars, features over 150 km of hiking trails connecting the handful of coastal villages and hamlets, where lodging is available, to one another and to the many beaches, mountain peaks, waterfalls, and pristine forests.
