It is located on a peninsula on the north of Rio de Janeiro. Ilhabela is an archipelago and city situated 4 miles off the coast of São Paulo state in Brazil. The island is 127 mi from the city of São Paulo and 210 mi from the city of Rio de Janeiro. The islands in total cover 134 sq mi. Its a popular destination for tourists. To access the city, one must take a boat or ferry in São Sebastião, as there are no roads which reach it. During the summer, one may wait more than an hour to take the ferry boat. The ferry takes 15 minutes to cross the channel between the two cities. Ilhabela offers all kinds of sports to do at the beaches . These ingredients make the Island a center of many aquatic activities. Sailing and diving are particularly popular here. In Ilhabela´s downtown area you can observe the historic architecture of the jail (the Coucilmen Chamber today), the church, and the old City Hall Building, which is now the Culture Hall. There is a mix of sophisticated stores and local handcraft markets. Coffee shops, ice cream stores and homemade candy stores can be visited during a walk to the village pier.
