Our fourth visit to the Arona Gran and as always a great holiday. Rooms good, food choice excellent and all staff very helpful and friendly. But there is a problem which needs attention ASAP. The dress code at dinner needs tightening up. Many men dressed extremely smart and many ladies in attractive dresses, BUT then others in non-smart shorts and tops, pool shoes and baseball caps are an insult to a 4* hotel and other guests. The Restaurant Manager on duty needs to refuse entry to all who are in appropriately dressed until they change into smarter outfits. And, there should no mobile phones allowed in the restaurant either at breakfast or dinner. Why would anyone need it when partaking of a delicious meal.

“Beautiful hotel”

Clean, great food, plenty of pools and the indoor spa pool and facilities were brilliant too. Only downside is location as it’s quite a walk to the main shopping area but that didn’t bother us as there’s a supermarket across the road from the hotel. The cocktails were amazing too.

My wife and I stayed here 15th to 29th December on a package booked with Jet2. The weather was pretty bad when we arrived with high winds. We were on the top floor in a side sea view room and there was very intrusive noise from the roof, we assume due to the wind. The reception staff were very helpful and arranged a move to a different room, this was apparently a higher category but we weren’t charged. Not entirely sure because it seems Jet2 and the hotel categorise the rooms slightly differently. Anyway, this response seemed typical, staff were very pleasant and helpful all the time, from the people doing the rooms through to the managers. The hotel is very attractive and located pretty much on the sea front, although the shore at this point is rock and pebble, not a beach, but the beaches of Cristianos are only a short walk away. The atrium/foyer area is particularly imposing and attractive. The rooms are good, we found the bed comfortable and slept well, despite the rather noticeable plastic mattress cover. Having to pay for the safe is annoying since it’s just sat there and presumably incurs no cost for the hotel whether it’s used or not. There’s a decent range of entertainment and diversions throughout the day including gym based classes such as yoga. The evening entertainment was also pretty good, often tribute type acts. We were half board and didn’t have the UP! facility. Breakfast was pretty good, something for everyone I would think. The evening meal is also a buffet and not so good. I found the fish and meat being cooked fresh on the griddle was generally unpalatable and sometimes quite unpleasant. I guess providing buffet food for such a large number of people is always going to be problematic but honestly found the standard of the evening meal disappointing for a hotel of this star rating. It’s an adults only hotel and the average age of guests is quite high and quite a few people had disabilities of one sort or another. Quite a few guests were using mobility scooters or walking frames.

After having stayed at this hotel on a number of previous occasions we decided to book 2 weeks over the Christmas period. As we have found previously the housekeeping and general maintenance is exceptional and had no issues whatsoever during our entire stay. The only area we found to be not on a par with previous stays was the Restaurant. The hotel is rated as 4 star but although there is a supposed dress code this is ignored completely by many of the guests. It is generally accepted that in the warmest months of summer many hotels often relax the long trouser policy for men, but this was December and not hot by any means. The evening dinner is seen by many as an occasion and not just a chance to eat and make a quick exit. At the Restaurant entrance there was a suggested dress code of shorts to the knee and no beach wear. This was completely ignored by many who wore gym shorts/swim shorts, tee shirts and flip flops. This generally made it feel like a cafeteria rather than a Restaurant. On Christmas Day it was specified that Gentlemen should wear long trousers but it was apparent that many had difficulty in matching appropriate tops and footwear. It was also noticeable upon entering the Restaurant for both Breakfast and Dinner that numerous tables particularly for couples were reserved, not by signage but by empty coffee pots at Breakfast and water bottles at Dinner. Some of these tables sat empty for up to an hour but as soon as particular guests arrived they were seated and the coffee pots/water bottles removed. I did raise this issue with reception upon checking out. The response was they must have reserved them through our reservations system. When I said they were reserved with empty coffee pots and water the receptionists said she would look into it. Standard reply I guess. The only other disappointment was the lack of Christmas atmosphere on Christmas morning at breakfast. There was no festive background music for guests to enjoy. Admittedly the locals celebrate on Christmas Eve but with the majority of guests not being Spanish you would have thought an effort would have been made.
