We have just returned from a lovely holiday at the Costa Colero Thalasso & Spa. Firstly this hotel is simply beautiful, the grounds are so well maintained and the flowers, palm trees and gardens are just stunning. Upon our delayed arrival from Manchester, we were greeted with 2 lovely people on reception, who quickly checked us in and even provided us with a bag of food as the restaurant was now closed. Upon entering our gorgeous spacious room (Sea view room 255) we were met with a lovely view of 1 of the pools and the sea beyond, the rooms were spotlessly clean and had everything you need (no it doesnt have a kettle or iron but i dont go on holiday to make my own tea or do my ironing, if you need this to make your holiday a happy one, I suggest packing your own or i believe you can hirer them). We stayed for 10 nights, my husband & our 3 year old daughter and my 2 parents (in their 70's). The food for the duration of our stay was wonderful, a very good choice at breakfast, lunch & dinner with show cooking at all 3 meals. The reviews that state no choice when you have at least 4 choices of potatoes alone astounds me but as they say you cant please everyone. Yes like all "All inclusive" it all gets a bit samey after a week but i would say if you are very fussy and hard to please then go B&B and eat at your chosen restaurant. There are some lovely restaurants on the Marina, we ate at Bollywood and had a fabulous Indian and also at Finnegans which was fantastic, just to see a little of the place really. The only very small negative (and this is purely for us a family with a small child) is they dont really cater for children, the food they do but the evening meal was at 7pm which is a little late for our little one, she got used to it, also the entertainment, the mini disco was at 9.15 which also is a bit too late but that's only our preference. We met some lovely fellow guests which just made our holiday even better. So to wrap up, this a fabulous hotel, lovely food, wonderful staff in a beautiful location, we will definitely return.

Well I am only half way through a weeks stay here and think I can safely award this Hotel 5 stars! This is my first stay at Hotel Costa Calero and the place is pretty much perfect! I have only ever stopped at either Peurto del Carmen or Playa Blanca before, so I was a little apprehensive then wouldn’t be enough to do in Puero Calero, as it is a lot smaller compared to the other two resorts but I needn’t have worried. It’s only a five minute walk to the harbour where you can find excursions, submarine trips, dune buggy hire etc so there is enough going on for a weeks stay, but there is so much going on at the hotel you probably don’t need to leave. There is also free shuttle bus that runs 3 times a day to take you to Puerto Del Carmen if you want a change of scenery or you could walk along the coastline which takes about 45 mins. The hotel itself is spacious and cleverly laid out with at least five different swimming pools. As usual, there are activities during the day and entertainment at night. Now I went when the renovations were ongoing so we had to use the buffet style restaurant. I thought the food was excellent with plenty of choice and no problem getting a seat. I struggle to see why so many reviewers are critical of the buffet style - perhaps they are comparing it to previous years but I have no such frame of reference. It is your typical buffet style experience but it seems well organised and not the usual cattle market I have come to expect. Because the restaurant is kind of open plan, inevitably you get some brave little birds daring to pinch some scraps of food, but everything is covered up and there are even electronic bird scarers set up to deter them. Rooms are lovely, spacious & clean, grounds beautifully maintained, and staff hard working. It was our anniversary and a bottle of plonk + a small box of chocolates was left for us - thank you. Now we went half board (breakfast & evening meal included) and it feels as everyone else was all inclusive? I’m sure we were the only ones having to actually pay for a drink in the evening!? (Actually there was a couple of occasions the staff didn’t charge me I presume because they just assumed I was half bored as nearly everybody was?!) I have a love/hate relationship with all inclusive: yes it’s lovely to walk to the bar and get unlimited drinks and ice creams during the day, but it feels like it ties me to the resort, meals become very samey and I’m reluctant to take advantage of the lovely little bars and restaurants that I see because I’ve got unlimited food & drink back at the hotel. But the good news is you can upgrade while you’re there at just €25 per person per day. So if you’re undecided what board basis to go I would recommend going half board (when we booked online it only cost us an additional £40 in total when upgrading from B&B to half board for a week) and you can always upgrade when you get there. The only stipulation is you can’t just do it for the occasional day here and there, so it needs to be from that on until the end of your stay. I would definitely return here again. No question. TIP: they are very few places to change £ into € so change money beforehand or make a trip into PDC

I am sat writing this by the pool on my last day of a weeks holiday. We usually as a family come here most years and have already booked to come for 2 weeks next June. This year I came on my own for a week of relaxation. Saying AI prestige. As previously reviews have commented I was advised of the refurbishment works going on (although we were told last September when we were here. ) so I fully knew what to expect. Upon arrival check in was quick & efficient you could tell the hotel was not at capacity as my room was ready. Room was a superior double with sea view, amazing view from the balcony and the biggest bed I’ve seen and was super comfy. The room was spotlessly clean and had a shower over the bath which I had requested. Food was as varied as it always has been. Breakfast & dinner choices were what you used to get in the main restaurant it was just not doubled like it used to be (fresh cooked meats both sides of the main restaurant). Yes the food wasn’t as hot as is usually is but this is due to it being in the outside, the staff in an evening really do make an effort to make it as much of an evening meal as the can do. My daughter is fussy but always manages to find something to eat and would have done this time if she had been with me I honestly don’t see what the problem is with the food that people moan about. In the week I was there I only saw a few little birds in the dining area at lunchtime I never encountered any at any other time. Entertainment staff work so hard and you don’t feel pressured to join in and are all so pleasant to chat too. And enjoyed playing bingo everyday still not won in the last 4yrs. Spa was as lovely as previous years it was nice to go anytime this year not having my daughter with me, really enjoyed going for 40/50mins each morning. Prestige lounge was extremely quiet towards the beginning of my week I’d pop in there after dinner and would be the only one in there it was nice to sit people watching/reading my book, it was also lovely to see absolute vodka in there as this my fav drink and usually isn’t in there, again the times I went in very clean and tidy. Pool areas were very clean as always saw them cleaning the sun beds and around the sun rad areas on a few mornings, pools though were freezing ok once you had been in a few minutes, but these seemed a lot colder than in September. Personally I think it would be a good idea to move the prestige sun lounger area closer to the pool, every time I walked past maybe just the 1 or 2 persons using it as it currently so far away from the pool, bar & toilets, it seems such a shame it isn’t being utilised. The only negative thing I could mention was the waiter in the prestige area of the restaurant in a morning he was very slow in previous years we must have been spoilt bad fresh orange juice was given to us as soon as we sat down, some mornings I would have to wait upto 10 mins after few days I just used to get it myself, then towards the end of the week a lady was there and she was very efficient. What makes this hotel a holiday to remember is the guests everyone says hi you get chatting to people over a drink or a game of bingo, wether it is couples younger & older, family’s, solo travellers or groups of friends the majority are so lovely and this is why we love coming back year after year.

I believe there is a saying that states “You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time” and when it comes to Hotels and All-Inclusive packages in most resorts, I would suspect this probably rings true. Hence some of the varied reviews for this Hotel. My wife and I have recently returned to the UK having spent two most excellent weeks at the Hotel Costa Calero on an All-Inclusive-Plus (Prestige) package, having selected this package as we were there to celebrate my wife’s special birthday. The holiday was booked through Jet2 Holidays and was our 4th time staying at this Hotel using Jet2 Holidays. As this was our 4th time visiting, we had a fair idea of what we were coming to and overall were not disappointed. A nice Marina with some excellent restaurants. A well laid out hotel with very comfortable rooms. From Cleaning Ladies (Diana) to the Restaurant & Bar staff (Hanna, Mustaffa, Carlos to name but a few) who all worked extremely hard to make the holiday as good as it was. A special mention to Yaiza for making special arrangements in regard to my wife’s birthday at EL Puntal restaurant and again at the end of our holiday. We met some very nice Saga ladies and gents as well some slightly younger couples and to which I believe is what this hotel has always been about. Meeting and enjoying good company for however long or short your time on holiday and in a safe environment. I decided to write this review as I had some queries of my own on the lead up to our holiday and having read several of the Tripadvisor reviews, still didn’t have all the answers to these queries. Most of these queries came about after I had received and email from Jet2 around December 18th, 2023, making me aware of renovations to both the Magdalena restaurant which would be closed from April through to the end of June as well as some rooms being refurbished. Also, that there was a new shopping complex being built behind the hotel and there may be some noise. I did try contacting Jet2 on four occasions to obtain more information in relation to these buildings works as well as how the hotel would create the same ambience in the Oyambre restaurant as you would have in the Magdalena restaurant. I also wanted to know how often or when El Puntal was available to Prestige guests. Needles to say I had to wait until we got to the Hotel before I got the real answers to these queries. El Puntal:- Let me start with El Puntal which was where we had the most excellent 1st nights dinner. This restaurant opens only on a Monday night providing a 3-course dinner, 2 choices per course, with Wine & Water available along with cheese and crackers to finish off. It is there for Prestige guests (All-Inclusive-Plus) as part of their package but needs to be reserved beforehand. I believe that other guests can book this but do not know what that would entail? Because we arrived on a Sunday and left 2 Sundays later, we were entitled to 2 visits to EL Puntal and had fantastic meals on both occasions but especially the 1st nights visit when the table was decorated for my wife’s birthday. The restaurant also provided a birthday cake for a small fee, having contacted Yaiza via email a week or so before arriving. The one thing I would say is that the restaurant is missing a trick. At the end of our meal, I would have liked to have finished it off with a Coffee & a Brandy. You could get the Brandy but no coffee in EL Puntal. The other problem guests could have, is if you arrive late on the Monday evening and are only there for a week or less, then you may miss out on EL Puntal’s delights! Magdalena:- The Magdalena restaurant was a nice restaurant and suspect when refurbishment is finished at the end of June it will be really nice again. I do have my doubts though that it will be completed in time for opening at the start of July as there seemed an awful lot of work still to be done. I hope I am wrong. Oyambre:- The Oyambre restaurant or as I have always referred to it as, the Canteen. This is where the edge was taken off the holiday slightly. I kind of already knew that this restaurant would not be able to provide the same ambience that the Magdalene provides. That feeling of visiting a restaurant and dressing up for the occasion as opposed to the Café come Canteen surroundings. And I don’t mean to be disrespectful as it was kept very clean and there was a tremendous amount of choice of food on offer for breakfast, lunch and evening meals. But sadly, failed to deliver that night-time restaurant vibe. In the past, the Magdalena restaurant would have theme nights such as Mexican or Italian cooking and the restaurant would be dressed up accordingly with flags and colours from that particular country. Didn’t appear to be any of that effort this year. It was also nice to have the different venues in the previous years as opposed to the same venue for all meals. As stated above, there was plenty of choice when it came to eating but sometimes, we did find some food things that had cooled down. Possibly been out for a while? Most food was hot enough though. Some reviews also mention the birds. The sparrows have always been there and can see how this could be off putting to some. And yes, people had mentioned seeing them being in amongst the salad but did not witness that myself but could see how this may have come about. Some of the food counters did have the sliding Perspex doors missing but people were also guilty of leaving these doors open as well. Again, this would be less likely to happen in the Magdalena restaurant. I guess the Oyambre may be next in line for a refurbishment? Lastly, we did go down to the Marina and eat on four occasions, just for a change of scene. Sometimes your body just craves something different, and the Marina has a number of very good restaurants. The Spa & Prestige Lounge:- As part of the All Inclusive Plus, you can use the Spa each day which was is a really good 2hr experience. There is also the Prestige Lounge which is setup with a very large fridge with beers, wine, juices etc… a counter with a load of premium spirits such as Malt Whisky’s, Gin Vodka etc… which you can go in and pour yourself and which is quiet refreshing as the bar people can be quite generous with their measures at times. This way you get to set your drinks up the way you prefer them while at the same time be able to last the pace. The room was also laid out with chairs and sofas’, computers, TV’s and the essential coffee machine which made it a very comfortable room for the most part. There was an issue towards the end of our stay that I am sure will have been addressed by now after it was brought to the hotel’s attention. The door locking mechanism to access the Prestige lounge was faulty and with enough force applied, could be forced open. Unfortunately, some guests of the hotel without the AI Plus privilege became aware of this and took advantage of the situation with one of the guests in particular going a bit overboard. That person then became a bit aggressive towards one of the elderly Saga ladies and then again on the following day to my wife. By this time the hotel was aware of this person and were actively seeking him out. In the four visits to this hotel and resort, this is the only real aggression I have come across and this was more to do with one person’s greed or need for alcohol. I still believe this to be a safe place to holiday though. Wi-Fi:- The Wi-Fi was not the best. Two days in the Wi-Fi failed and was down for around 4-5 days and struggled for around 10 days in total, eventually being reinstated a couple of days before we came home. For us, it was more of an inconvenience at times but for other guests, we could understand why they would be a bit more peeved. The New Shopping Complex:- We did ask if this complex was likely to be finished this year and was told that it would be by the Fall. I took that as October, November time. Again, I am not so sure it will be. Should be a great addition to the area when it does but there didn’t seem to be a lot of building activity going on so not much noise to talk of. Some days the builders were on site then some days nothing but when they were on site, you couldn’t really hear anything. I hope the detail within this review is of some help to anyone visiting this very nice hotel and resort.
