My first impressions upon arriving at El Galeon were that it was simply an impersonal business type hotel with little flair, but after a few nights here on a long hiking trek on La Palma, the staff here helped me change my opinion. The location, while not particularly beautiful, is excellent as it is close enough to walk into town and is also quiet. As noted by others, the apartment style rooms lend themselves to having meals in the room which I did on a few occasions. The size of the room allows one to settle in and relax. Still, all of that pales in relation to the wonderful staff. Estella (Esther?) at the reception desk was so very helpful to me on numerous occasions. Once she helped me to utilize the hotel laundry to complete the very necessary task of cleaning my hiking clothing! She deserves a raise in salary! The breakfast room at El Galeon is also a treat. Yolanda is charge there and precisely at 7:30 she opens up a great buffet style room that allowed me to pack in the needed calories before a long day hiking. All in all, the El Galeon (especially the staff) proved that first impressions are not necessarily true.

Stayed for 3 nights, Saturday to Tuesday. (BTW - pretty much all of Santa Cruz shuts at 1400hrs Saturday and doesn't open until 0800hrs Monday. Virtually no restaurants open). You do have basic cooking facilities and a kitchen area - which is fairly well equipped. Hotel is clean, staff friendly and any problems are sorted asap - it's an OK place. Biggest bonus is free secure underground parking. Breakfast is a pretty good spread - various hams, cheeses, fruit, smoothies, cereal, some bread and rolls (a little hard thou) no croissant- not even now and again. But it's a good stay. The minus to El Galeón is two fold. No.1 - Your views are of hillside with a couple of dilapidated buildings or the container port No.2 - The Hotel is situated at the top of a hill (quite a rise really), so any adventures into the main town area - about 0.4/0.5 miles would involve a hike back up to the hotel. A shame it's not at bottom of the hill, because parking in Santa Cruz is not an easy pastime. SO - you see the compromise - free safe parking 'v' the ease of wondering around the town. But overall it's very good if you have a car.

We stayed here 3 nights in total, first 1 night on arrival day and then returning 4 days later staying for 2 nights before departing. Our rooms were both identical large apartment style self-catering rooms, this with a separate bedroom and bathroom then a more than large enough lounge and kitchen areas. All area were clean and comfortable and there’s a sofa with coffee table to watch the TV from and a balcony with a bit of a view depending on which room you're in with a table and chairs which was good on warm evenings sitting to have a beer. A good breakfast served downstairs with all the usual continental items. The building is just a short walk down the hill into the town to eat in evenings and there’s a supermarket not so far away to stock up on provisions, we made use of the self-catering facilities only to make a cup of morning tea and a packed lunch for our walks but there’s enough equipment and cups, plates, cutlery etc. in the kitchen to cook a full meal if desired. At the end of our break we were back again for 2 nights and were a little disappointed to see that the room was not cleaned or bed made up after the first night but apparently that’s usual for a couple of days per week as no room service is available on those days, anyhow no big deal but it would have been nice to know this in advance. Overall a spacious, comfy and convenient location to stay.
