We have just returned from a fabulous 2 weeks at this lovely hotel. Our room was spacious, comfortable & spotlessly clean. Breakfast was wonderful, with freshly squeezed orange juice, tropical fruits, a great selection of meats, cheeses, bacon, sausage, eggs, omelettes, crepes, etc. The coffee was excellent & Cava always available, free of charge. The swimming pool & sundecks were great. The situation is perfect, with glorious views & spectacular sunsets. There are many excellent restaurants within a 15 minute walk. We cannot wait to return to the Hotel Gran Rey!

Just returned from the Hotel Gran Rey and found it to be very nice. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Our room overlooked the mountains which was nice and we had the sun on the room in the morning which meant the room was cooler come evening time. The room was kept clean and the shower was excellent. The air conditioning was good and quiet. We stayed half board and honestly couldn't fault the food at breakfast or evening . We found there to be a good selection so always found something to eat. The only issue we had which is small and our personal preference, was paying for the drinks during our evening meal. The staff wanted you to sign for what you had then that was sent to reception to go on your room bill. We preferred to pay for ours there and then. There were a couple of staff who we couldn't quite get to understand this.

A solid 4/5. I agree with a previous reviewer that this looks probably the best place to stay in VGR and popular with Germans particularly. The rooms were clean with comfy beds, whisper-quiet air conditioning, hot showers (tremendous water pressure here!) and excellent housekeeping. We found reception staff friendly and helpful, as were the young men clearing breakfast tables. Breakfast includes an orange-squeezing machine (delicious) and all the usual continental buffet. There were cooked items too and omelettes on request. Good variety of bread. The evening meals were buffet style and the menu did change daily but was posted so late we got fed up waiting and went out instead. Nearby restaurants varied in quality, but two-thirds of them were closed for holidays (start June until end July). This was never mentioned by TUI and was a huge disappointment...although clearly not the hotel's fault. The roof pool deck was lovely and deep except at one end. We discovered that sad-looking smokers congregate at an area just outside the south corner of the pool, which then blew into the pool area, but of course we are still some way before they can be forced behind the nearest dumpster.

TUI moved us to this hotel because our original choice was closed for the season! The hotel is about a 1.5 hour drive from the ferry port in San Sebastian up over the central mountain on steep winding roads with hairpin bends - not for nervous or inexperienced drivers. The hotel has NO daytime or evening activities it is purely accommodation. The location is perfect directly opposite the beach and is the only hotel in VGR, which is the best resort on the island. The room was basic but clean, similar to a 1980's hotel with no tea/coffee facilities. You could get hot water from the cafe on the 3rd floor but you have to provide your own items. The large TV in the room is useless as there are no English channels, only Spanish or German. This is predominantly a German destination with lots of hikers and no English when we were there. The car park outside is public, so often difficult to find a space even with the hotel's own car park at the back. Most guests come by car so there in under capacity for the number of hotel guests. No street parking nearby either so you have to drive around the block and find something somewhere. We went 5 nights B&B because of reviews about the food and were glad as the menu was bland and uninspiring, in fact the dining room was never full with lots of empty tables. A lot of restaurants and shops were closed from June to September but there were some open further along towards the harbour at reasonable prices. The breakfast buffet was very good but the staff were slow to replenish food or crockery so we had to chase up items several times. Good choice of food but with a definite German taste. Lots of fruit and bread, juice, cava and hot dishes but nice to sit outside and eat. We'd recommend this hotel as it is the only one in the resort. We visited all the other main resorts on the island and VGR was by far the best. Be aware that if coming by car there is only one steep road out and into VGB which is very winding and can be narrow with parked cars. There are not many roads on the island anyway so wherever you go, you have to negotiate steep roads, hairpin bends, roadworks where there is no tarmac but gravel surfaces - watch your hire car! La Gomera is an interesting place, dramatic scenery, not geared up for tourists but the people are nice and we couldn't fault the staff in the hotel.
