The apartment was basic but clean and comfortable. Cleaning and change of towels every third day. We had a balcony with a view of the sea and sunshine in the afternoon. Stunning sunsets There is a pool on the roof and sun beds on the upper floors. It is 'self catering' but there was only a 2 ring hob in our room. For us this was fine and eating out is very reasonable. Plenty of restaurants within a short walk. Local small supermarkets and a Spa not too far away. Reception is open 8.00 - 1.00. Wi fi only in the foyer. The staff were very helpful

“Very nice appartments, very poor staff”

The hotel itself is very nice, it has a nice calm patio were you can sit and rest or rent a book or some water games. There is a swimming pool on the roof with magnifique views over the sea on one side and the mountains on the other side. The room is clean and tidy, with a fully equipped kitchen, where you can cook pretty easily, or at least make yourself a coffee for breakfast. The only problem of this hotel is its staff. There is a receptionist, I think her name was Kirsten, who was really not nice at all. We arrived in the evening, but not too late, around 6/7pm. The reception was closed and there was an envelope with our name and the key to our room. There was also a note that the reception is closed this evening. I though, ok for once. We came to the room, found out it was extremely hot because it was oriented to the west so the sun shined into it the whole afternoon. Also, the room was smoking although we specifically requested a non smoking room. Luckily, we couldn´t smell any smoke. Anyway, there was nobody we could ask to change the room, although the hotel was pretty empty (I spotted two other occupied rooms). In the morning, we wanted to leave early because we wanted to go for a trek and thus be there early to see the best of the nature. When we were leaving, Kerstin the receptionist just arrived to work and told us she needs our passports. I told her we are just leaving and that I will bring them in the evening. (According to the paper in the room the reception should be opened in the evening). She said there will be nobody in the evening and that we have to give her our passports now because that´s the rule for each nationality. I know precisely that it is a rule, I am a former receptionist, but still, it is their fault that they are too lazy to come to work in the evening although they should be there. We lost 15 minutes with the passport thing, because it took her ages to start the computer and the system. The funny thing is, when we came back in the evening, the reception was closed, but there were lights on and somebody was there, probably doing some paperwork - isn´t that crazy?

We have been to La Gomera many times but normally stay in Playa Santiago. Valle Gran Rey was a very pleasant surprise for us. Much busier than Playa Santiago, but still very relaxed and quiet compared to Tenerife. We love walking and swimming in the sea, so Valle Gran Rey and these apartments were an excellent choice. The rooms and in fact the whole place was very clean, the pool was an added bonus. However I agree with other people who say it is very poorly run, reception has some very strange opening times and the staff aren't particularly helpful. We asked for a sea view room and we could see a bit of sea, but mainly it was hidden behind some very large bushy scrub. I don't think any rooms would have a sea view. There was free wifi, but you had to stand in the courtyard to get reception which was rather annoying
