“Amazing Hotel”

My mum and I stayed at the Waikiki this July (2024) and had an amazing time! We were so impressed with this hotel, especially with the price point for the all inclusive superior double room (I think we paid ~£750 each). I stayed in Mallorca last year in a three star all inclusive and it was worlds away from how good the Waikiki was. I was expecting similar experiences here as although the local tourist board rates this hotel as 4*, TUI gives it a 3.5*, but I was blown away. The Pros: * The staff were incredibly friendly and always willing to help us out * Although not our sort of thing, the animation team put on so many activities every day for both adults and kids, including aqua fitness, water polo, pool tournaments, bingo, sangria making classes, shuffleboard and more * The site itself is lovely, we were happy to find they had their own small shop that we could top up our supplies with. The pool was never overcrowded despite there being a lot of guests. All of the facilities were clean including the pool toilets, bars and restaurant. There were also plenty of sunbeds for everyone. * The food! I was very worried that the food options weren’t going to be great and would be repetitive but I cannot speak highly enough of the food offered by the restaurant. The restaurant itself is huge with plenty of seating areas, and offered plenty of choice each night with fish and meat options, lots of cold salads/cheeses/meats, and staples for pickier eaters such as fish fingers, chips, pizza, burgers, hot dogs and rice as well as a soft serve machine. Our personal highlights were the steak, tacos (hard and soft shelled) and the Chinese chicken curry. We did not try the snack bar but plenty of people were coming out throughout the day with plates of these more basic staples like burgers, hot dogs and chips. * The drink options on the all inclusive were amazing, there were plenty of staple cocktails (mojitos, strawberry daiquiri, tequila sunrise, sex on the beach) and they had sparkling white and rose wine which was much appreciated. They even had some brand name spirits in the all inclusive too like Gordon’s gin. They also had all the basic all inclusive drinks like beer and wine (white, rose and red) on tap which were all fine, as well as mocktails (the san Franciscos were lovely) and strawberry or lemonade slushes. * Although we did not travel with children, as I mentioned there was plenty of kid’s activities both throughout the day and at night, as well as a dedicated kids pool area, that had sunbeds for the adults too and a soft drink station outside so you didn’t have to walk back to the main bar to refill. * The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the beach but does offer shuttle buses. We found the walk was absolutely fine but if you have mobility issues you may want to take the shuttle. The beach was absolutely lovely with a great atmosphere due to the many bars and restaurants on the front. The beach is accessible by stairs but we did find a lift on the front, so again, if you have mobility issues there is an option for you. The beach had plenty of sunbeds available and cost us €7.50 for two beds and a parasol for the day which we didn’t think was too bad. There’s also public toilets on the beach front (€1 entry if you’re going in by yourself) as well as a McDonald’s right next door, in which you can use the toilet if you buy something. There was also people walking around on the beach selling €5 sangrias from a nearby bar which were lovely! * The atmosphere of the hotel was lovely with most guests being very friendly, especially when the euros was being televised in the kids club downstairs. There was always music playing by the pool and gave a lovely atmosphere overall. * We honestly didn’t spend much time in our room but the facilities were absolutely fine, the superior room was spacious and we found the beds very comfy. I’m not sure if this was just the case with the superior room, but the safe was also free and easy to use which was great. * Gran Canaria is an LGBTQ+ friendly destination and it was so lovely to see lots of LGBTQ+ couples and families having a lovely, comfortable holiday without fear of judgement. We didn’t get time to visit the nearby Yumbo shopping centre but we heard there were lots of LGBTQ+ friendly bars and drag performances there and was very popular among many of the guests we spoke to. * I’m not a huge fan of holiday entertainment but there was performers on every night which added a nice atmosphere. There is a dedicated smoking area off the bar and pool that we sat in each night with some cards and listened to the performances, which were a bit hit and miss but fine if you like that sort of thing. The cons: * we found that small flies were coming up out of the hole in our sink. They didn’t cause us too much bother if we kept the bathroom door and they were easy enough to get rid of, but it did become a nuisance at some points as we did end up with a couple of bites. * The housekeeping wasn’t always the best, on a couple of occasions we had to request toilet roll as none had been left in our room from cleaning. There was also a couple of occasions in which we requested clean towels and they were not provided, instead our dirty towels were hung out on the balcony. * Sun beds seem to be reserved from 7 in the morning, we found that if we went down at 8 and placed our towels down before breakfast we were fine, but those who woke up later in the day found it hard to find beds in the ‘popular’ areas where the sun was out all day. * There is seemingly no security on the complex which is unfortunate as we were witness to a couple of heated arguments between guests over sun beds as people were throwing others’ towels on the floor, as well as some very drunk guests at night in the smoking area being quite disruptive on occasion. As two women travelling alone we were also targeted by a very rude drunk man who started making us feel very uncomfortable one afternoon, we were able to walk away fairly quickly but he was also harassing other women. I think if there was maybe a security guard on duty just patrolling, this could have been prevented. * There was a LOT of people trying to sell you things on the beach, more than I’ve experienced in other destinations, and it could get quite annoying. One woman even tried to touch us and we had to firmly tell her to leave. If you don’t want to be bothered just keep your head down and don’t engage but it could get quite annoying! Overall we had a fantastic time and would recommend this hotel highly! The pros by far outweighed the cons and we can’t thank the staff enough for being so helpful and giving us the best time. The hotel is fantastic for both families and couples and we would definitely come back.
